The Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago is a site for rigorous inquiry and exchange that encourages the examination of complex issues through the lens of art objects and artistic practice. Through strong community and scholarly partnerships, the Museum incorporates diverse ideas, identities, and experiences into its exhibitions and collections, academic inquiry, and public programming.

Job Summary

This position supports performing arts management, administration, and scheduling. Coordinates logistics for theatrical productions and film and video presentations. Works within established procedures with a moderate degree of supervision.

Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the Public Practice team, serves as public ambassador for the Smart Museum and leads art education experiences for a variety of audiences including K-12, University, and adult community groups.
  • Leads single-visit Museum tours, artmaking, and other interpretive activities for tour participants.
  • Facilitates the Museum's Program Lab Partnerships, working with school administrators and teachers to build a fully customized and multi-year arts learning program.
  • Facilitates curricular and co-curricular programming at the Smart for University of Chicago students.
  • Strategizes the structure and hiring for future Museum Educators cohorts as comprised of University of Chicago students and alumni of the Odyssey Project. Leads processes for onboarding, training, and mentorship for new educators.
  • Develops arts-based resources for remote teaching and learning for distribution to educators across the Chicago Public School system.
  • Develops and delivers programming in consultation with Public Practice staff for family, University, and adult audiences.
  • Supports administrative duties to build capacity across the museum.
  • Represents the Smart with external partners and organizations by leading workshops, presenting at conferences, and attending convenings that connect the Smart's mission with our place.
  • Participates fully and promotes DEIA initiatives at the Smart.
  • Continually explores and develops educational strategies for use in the Museum's galleries, including contributions to exhibition and interpretive strategies.
  • This is a part-time benefits eligible position.
  • Provides support for the development and deployment of productions and programs.
  • Assists with public programming and other educational programs or projects regarding the theatre.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Education:
  • Associates degree.

Experience:
  • Prior teaching experience.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Strong public speaking skills and a comfort level for facilitating public experiences.
  • A high level of interest in visual art and have an interest in teaching and learning.
  • Some knowledge of studio art practices and/or art history.
  • Interested in working with a variety of age groups.

Preferred Competencies
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • Must be dependable and responsible.
