Michigan State University Infrastructure Planning and Facilities invites applications for the position of First Shift Plumber. The department is responsible for all aspects of maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and installation of commercial Plumbing.

This position will perform a combination of minor repairs, fabrication, installation, maintenance, service, alteration, operation, and other related duties generally associated with the plumbing trade; requisition of materials and parts; stock, maintain and operate a University service vehicle; interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and project specifications; estimate labor and material to be used on the job; ability to identify and mitigate health hazards associated within the working environment. This position will carry an on-call cell phone on a weekly rotating basis. This position will also prepare detailed reports, recommendations, records, and similar information for supervisory and management use. This position may work a swing shift trouble truck and respond to a wide variety of service calls and carry an on-call cell phone on a weekly rotating basis. Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
  • Completion of high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Five years of experience in the trade that includes two years of experience in commercial plumbing installation, maintenance and troubleshooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Possession of a State of Michigan Journey Plumber license.
  • Must possess a Master's Plumber license and either a Medical Gas and Vacuum Certification or ASSE 5000 Tester Certification to receive progression step increases at the 24 month mark.
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator driver's license.
  • Expert knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and national).
  • Must furnish own hand tools.
  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.
Desired Qualifications

Completion of an approved / registered plumbing apprenticeship program; experience with commercial / industrial piping and pipe welding; experience with commercial water softeners; experience with commercial water heaters; experience with commercial reverse osmosis water filtration; experience with sewer cleaning and sewer camera; possession of a ASSE 5000 installer / repairer / tester certification; possession of a NFPA Medical Gas and Vacuum certification; experience in customer contact.
