Duties to include:

  • Patrols the university campus and outlying property to protect life and property;
  • Responds to radio dispatches and answer calls on foot, bicycle, or squad car to prevent and detect law violations and apprehend violators
  • Prepares written investigative reports and documentation;
  • Investigates harm, damage or threats of potential harm, or damage to persons or property by interviewing witnesses and conducting visual or audio surveillance or searches;
  • Use sound logic and independent judgement to react quickly and appropriately in dangerous and emergency situations;
  • Provide safety services to University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students;
  • Exercises judgment in interpreting laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures;
  • Works with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Schedule Rotating: Scheduled 12 hours shifts, 6:00am to 6:00pm or 6:00pm to 6:00am. Overtime opportunities available for special events and athletic events as well as additional department needs.

The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety is responsible for emergency response on the University of Iowa campus. Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
  • Possession of certification from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy as a Law Enforcement Officer, or
  • Possession of law enforcement certification in another state and successful completion of all application and examination requirements as outlined in Iowa Administrative Code 501-3.8(80B).
Special Qualifications:
  • Iowa Law Enforcement Officer Certification; or
  • Possession of law enforcement certification in another state and successful completion of all application and examination requirements as outlined in Iowa Administrative Code 501-3.8(80B); and
  • Valid Driver's license is required and ability to meet and maintain University Driving Policy Standards
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Ability to maintain a professional and respectful demeanor with the public that fosters good relations.
  • Awareness of the role that the Department of Public Safety plays in campus safety and how the department supports the accomplishment of the University of Iowa's mission and goals.
  • Ability to observe situations analytically, impartially, and objectively.
  • Previous experience with high stress / dynamic work situations.
  • Ability to adapt, prioritize, and organize multiple tasks.
  • Intermediate to proficient computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of communication skills, oral and written, in order to interact effectively with people from various and diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree
