Occ Summary

Provide clinical assessment, physiological mon itoring and testing toassist with diagnosis, management, and prevention ofsleep relateddisorders with the use of various diagnostic and therapeu tic toolsproviding care to patientsof all ages. These tools include but are notlimited to polysomnography, scoring of clinical events accordin gtoprofession and laboratory guidelines (such as respiratory events,card iac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.), generating accuratereports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data,.positiveairway pressur edevices, oximeter, capnography, actigraphy, nocturnaloxygen, screeningd evices, and questionnaires.


Work Performed

Level 1-Ve rify the medical order and protocol.- Explain the procedure and orientth e patient to the sleep center.- Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determineproper functioning.- Perform routine PAP mask f itting.- Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted publishedsta ndards.- Assist with following "lights out" procedures to establish andd ocument baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobinsaturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.)- Assist and observe polysomnography data acquisition.- Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinicalevents, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order tofacilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnography resu lts.- Assist with appropriate interventions (including actions necessary forpatient safety and therapeutic intervention (e.g. BPAP, O2administra tion).- Assist with following "lights on" procedures to verify integrity ofcollected data and complete the data collection process. (e.g. learn toperform the physiological and instrumentcalibrations and instructsthe patient on completing questionnaires, etc.)- Perform routine polysomnogr aphy data acquisition while monitoringstudy-tracing quality to ensure si gnals are artifact-free.- Identify and report signal abnormalities.-Demo nstrate the knowledge andskills necessary to recognize andprovideage spe cific care in the treatment, assessment and education ofadolescent, adul t, and geriatric patients.Level 2- Perform all duties of the Level 1.- R eview history, physical information, medications, procedure requestand s tudy protocol.- Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determineproper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.-Perform "lights out" procedures to establish and document baselinevalues(such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory andheart rates, et c.).- Independently perform routine and c-pap/split polysomnography data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustments, if necessary.- Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary forpatient safety and therap eutic intervention (e.g.BPAP, O2administration).- Perform "lights on" pr ocedures to verify integrity of collected dataand complete thedata colle ction process. (e.g. learn to perform thephysiological and instrument ca librations and instructs the patient oncompleting questionnaires, etc.). Level 3- Perform all duties of the Level 1 and 2.- Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order toidentify and meet thepatient-sp ecific needs (physical/mentallimitations, current emotional/physiologica l status regarding thetesting procedure, pertinent medical/social histor y) to determine finaltesting parameters/procedures in conjunction with t he ordering physicianor clinical director and laboratory protocols.- Exp lain pre-testing, testing and post-testing procedures to thepatient.- Pe rform routine and complex PAP mask fitting.- Perform routineand complex PAP/split/BPAP/ASV polysomnography dataacquisition while monitoring stud y-tracing quality to ensure signals areartifact-free and make adjustment s, if necessary.- Perform positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.- Follow procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep LatencyTest(MSLT), M aintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP,oxygen tit ration etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data.- Oversees and per forms difficult and unusual procedures and therapeuticinterventions.- Pe rforms needed maintenance on equipment to include communication ofproble m to co-workers, appropriate vendor or the supervisor.- Troubleshoots eq uipment and lab issues independently, considered anequipment super user. - Demonstrates ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.- Developsclinical standards and protocols.- Generate requisitions for pa tient studies prn/check in patients.- Assign nightly workload to coworke rs.- Processes daily charges.- Perform minimum number of hours designate d a year as charge tech.


Level Characteristics

Level 1A Polysomnography Technician develops competency in and performs thebas ics of polysomnography testing and associated interventions underdirect supervision of aPolysomnography Technologist 2 or a Polysomnography Tec hnologist3,10 hours of CEUs, selects 1 choice from a listof options for professional growth (e.g., member of national organization, committeewor k).Must be enrolled in AASM A-Step on-line education modules.Level 2A Po lysomnography Technologist 2 performs comprehensive polysomnographytesti ng and analysis, and associated interventions under the generalsupervisi on of a Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) 3 and/or theclinical direct or (MD, PhD, DO) or designee.A Polysomnography Technologist 2 canprovide supervision of aPolysomnography Technician.12 hours of CE, 10 must be C EUs, selects 3 choices from a list ofoptions for professional growth.Lev el 3A Polysomnography Technologist 3 works under the general supervision ofthe clinicaldirector (M.D., D.O., or PhD) or designeeto provide compr ehensiveevaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involvepol ysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care andedu cation. A Polysomnography Technologist 3 can perform thedutiesdefined fo r a Polysomnography Technologist 2 and may providesupervision of other s taff.16 hours of CE, 10 must be CEUs, selects 5 choicesfrom a list ofopt ions for professional growth.


Minimum Qualifications


Education

LevelI High school diploma or GED or 1 year of post-secondary education, or current enrollment in an accredited educational program leading to an Associates Degree in a health related field with an emphasis in polysomnography. Level 2 Associates Degree in a health related field preferred, or successful completion of a polysomnography program, of no less than one year in duration, associated with a state license and/or nationally accredited educational facility. Level 3 Associates Degree in a health related field preferred in polysomnography, or successful completion of a polysomnography program, of no less than one year in duration, associated with a state license and/or nationally accredited educational facility.


Experience

Level 1 With an associate's degree in a health related field, no experience required; otherwise 6 months of direct patient care experience. Level 2 18 months experience in polysomnography testing preferred or Documented proficiency in all required competencies as a Polysomnography Technician. If no associate's degree in a health related field, must have an additional two years experience in direct patient care. Level 3 4 years experience in Polysomnography Technology required.


Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Level 1 Registered Polysomnography Technologists (RPSGT) required. Maintain current BLS certification. Level 2 Registered Polysomnography Technologists (RPSGT) required. Maintain current BLS certification. Level 3Registered Polysomnography Technologists (RPSGT) required. Maintain current BLS certification.
