The Zanne lab is searching for a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Biology at the University of Miami (Miami, FL).

The Zanne Lab studies how plants are constructed and how that construction affects carbon cycling as mediated by various biotic and abiotic decay agents. We are beginning new projects in seasonally flooded grasslands in cerrado in Brazil, where termite mounds create novel elevated sites, shifts to woody flora and changes in carbon cycling. We use a variety of sensors to measure CO2 and CH4 carbon flux at different scales from individual pieces of deadwood and termite mounds to ecosystem and global levels. We will also sample soils, wood and termites for microbial community composition and function. The Postdoctoral Associate will be primarily focused on investigating how plant traits, local climates, microbial and termite communities, and seasons affect the carbon gas fluxes along a seasonally flooded grassland gradient. As possible, they will also help with field work in Australia. Specifically, the postdoctoral associate will set up, run and analyze field projects in Brazil to understand how microbial and termite communities affect carbon cycling at different scales. The postdoctoral associate should have a background in bioinformatics, quantitative analyses, biogeochemistry and/or plant-microbe or plant-termite interactions, as well as interest or experience in remote field work, ideally in Brazil.

The Postdoctoral Associate will receive training in functional ecology, carbon cycling, global change and microbial community bioinformatic measures and will have the opportunity to develop skills in grant writing, teaching and/or mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and writing papers as lead and co-author.

Preferably candidates with a PhD in Biology or related discipline and research experience in quantitative analyses in R, biogeochemistry, plant-microbe or plant-termite interactions and/or bioinformatics in any study system, with preference for those with experience in Brazil. The candidate must have a deep interest in biotic interactions, plant and microbe functional ecology, carbon cycling and global change. Beneficial qualifications include experience in and willingness to do remote field work, carbon sensor development and deployment and manuscript writing. Other desirable qualifications include a strong work ethic and a strong track record of publications.

Please include your CV (including contact information for 3 references), a short statement of previous research, and a cover letter explaining your interest in this position and how it will support you toward your career goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in relevant field.
