Post-Doctoral Scientist - Virology, Vaccinology, Infectious Disease

Zoetis Veterinary Medicine Research and Development (VMRD), Swine Biologicals group in Kalamazoo, MI is seeking a Post-Doctoral scientist to work in a collaborative effort across multiple Zoetis departments to further understand vaccine efficacy.

Position summary

Zoetis is the largest animal health company in the world with an industry-leading research and development team. The Swine Biologicals group conducts basic and applied research to support development of safe and effective vaccines for the global swine industry. We are recruiting a highly motivated Post-Doctoral scientist to contribute to advancing strategies in swine vaccine development at Zoetis.

Position responsibilities

Work closely with scientists to develop research strategies to address unmet needs in swine vaccine development.

Perform real-time surveillance, incidence, and evolution analyses of virus sequences.

Develop specific, testable hypotheses to understand unique virus characteristics and the role of those characteristics in likelihood of causing disease or evading vaccine-induced protection Design and perform in vitro and clinical studies to assess hypotheses

Review, interpret and apply relevant literature applicable to the research goal.

Apply a variety of cellular and molecular immunology or biology techniques.

Perform preliminary assay and reagent development with knowledge of antibodies and/or protein interactions.

Work across functional groups within Zoetis to further the research goals.

Preferred Experience

The successful candidate should have experience in conducting hypothesis-based research in both in vitro and in vivo models. Experience with swine in a clinical or research setting is preferred.

Expertise in maintenance of and experimentation with cell lines, including sterile cell culture techniques, cell preservation, and cell-based assays.

Experience with genetic sequence analysis and knowledge of bioinformatics tools/databases, BLAST, DNASTAR/Lasergene

Experience with molecular biology techniques including DNA extraction, manipulation, quantification and cloning

Experience in clinical study design

Interest or experience with protein purification and analysis, including immunoprecipitation, Western blotting, biotinylation and other protein labeling methods is desired.

Ability to work independently on research projects within area of specialization and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Minimum Qualifications

DVM/PhD, DVM/MS, or PhD in virology, infectious disease, molecular biology or closely related field, with 0-3 years relevant research experience or DVM with 2-4 years of relevant, independent research experience.
