About This Position

The Department of Surgery in conjunction with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has an exciting new career opportunity for a Postdoctoral Associate in Breast Cancer Research. Dr. Karoline Briegel's laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms underlying breast cancer heterogeneity and tumor progression, with a focus on transcriptional/epigenetic regulation of lineage plasticity and cancer stem cell formation. We use transcriptomic, genomic, and proteomic approaches in combination with patient-derived cell culture and mouse in vivo models of breast cancer.

Dr. Briegel's laboratory has discovered a novel WNT-controlled transcriptional regulatory mechanism (Rieger et al., Mol. Cell. Biology, 2010) that is essential for cell fate and stem cell regulation in breast epithelial tissues (Lindley et al, Development, 2015). Recently, we reported that aberrant activation of this WNT transcriptional mechanism is a major driver of cancer stemness and metastatic progression in treatment-resistant breast cancer types (Garikapati et al., BioRxiv, 2021), which may provide a new therapeutic angle to overcome treatment resistance.

We are seeking an independent, highly creative and motivated postdoctoral fellow with experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell and/or cancer biology. Familiarity with epigenetics and protein-protein interaction studies is also important. Prior experience in breast cancer biology is preferred but not required. It is expected that the candidate will have the ability to design experiments, collect and tabulate data, publish and present results, as well as participate in the training of graduate and rotation students in a research laboratory setting. The project will include genome-wide transcriptomic, proteomic, and chromatin structure analysis, protein-protein interaction studies, sgRNA screens, organoid and tissue culture models, as well as mouse models.

Minimum Qualifications

Recent Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, cancer biology or related fields. Evidence of scholarly ability (record of publication in peer reviewed journals, etc.). Ability to communicate in written and spoken English is absolutely required. Applications should include full curriculum vitae, publication list, information on years of experience in research and laboratory work. Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

The University of Miami offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, tuition remission and more.
