Job Info

If you are interested in applying pioneering machine learning algorithms as well as custom disease-relevant genomic datasets (e.g., coronary artery single-nucleus chromatin accessibility and RNA sequencing) to work towards developing targeted cardiovascular treatments, then this exciting AstraZeneca postdoctotal opportunity might be the next step in your career.

About AstraZeneca:

AstraZeneca is a global, science-led, patient-centred biopharmaceutical company that focuses on discovering, developing, and commercialising prescription medicines for some of the world's most serious diseases. But we're more than a global leading pharmaceutical company. At AstraZeneca, we are dedicated to being a Great Place to Work and empowering employees to push the boundaries of science and fuel their entrepreneurial spirit. There's no better place to make a difference in medicine, patients, and society.

About the Postdoc Programme:

Bring your expertise, apply your knowledge, follow the science, and make a difference. AstraZeneca's Postdoc Programme is for self-motivated individuals looking to deliver exciting, high-impact projects in a collaborative, engaging and innovative environment. You'll work with peers and professionals from a diverse set of backgrounds and a world-class academic mentor specifically aligned to your project. We'll help you develop valuable networks which support your research and future career development!

AstraZeneca Postdocs are respected as specialists and encouraged to speak up. They lead ground-breaking drug discovery and development research projects. Our vibrant, multi-disciplinary scientific teams empower and support our Postdocs. We encourage them to share their research at conferences, publish papers, achieve their goals, and make a difference to our patients.

You'll learn from industry leaders working on innovative research across our organization. In addition, our Postdoc Training Programme will support you to develop transferrable skills from influencing others to shaping the agenda to data analysis.

This postdoctoral fellowship position is for two years with the possibility for a third (on merit).

About the Opportunity:

In this role you will apply both machine learning predictive modeling and genetic perturbations of non-coding regulatory sequences to identify cell-specific targets for coronary artery disease (CAD). You will apply expertise in data science, machine learning, as well as multi-omics integration to predict and validate functional regulatory networks in vascular cell types. This work will enhance our understanding of disease-relevant cis-acting elements and trans-acting effector proteins and metabolites. With the knowledge generated from these analyses you will work to develop more precise targeting strategies against the primary disease-causing pathways for CAD and related cardiometabolic diseases.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with your Academic Mentor to develop and refine machine learning/artificial intelligence models to discover novel cardiovascular disease networks and biomarkers
  • Work with your Supervisors and other ML/AI Scientists at AstraZeneca to develop a cardiovascular risk engine using AstraZeneca's extensive clinical trial databases
  • Validate the risk engine with Real World Data
  • Develop a user-friendly interface for the risk engine
  • Communicate results through peer-reviewed publications, internal and external presentations, conferences, and websites.

Qualification, Skills & Experience
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a quantitative discipline (e.g., computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, pharmacology, computational biology, applied mathematics)
  • Expertise working with large-scale multi-omics data sets and genomic datasets from various public repositories.
  • Experience applying classic machine learning algorithms to predict functional regulatory sequences or variants.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry applications in at least one of the following: metabolic flux analysis, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, or biomarker quantitation.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, statistics, machine learning, and/or computational modelling in R, python, MATLAB, or other languages.

Desirable
  • Solid understanding of pharmacology, physiology, and human genetics.
  • Strong communications skills, including manuscript writing, oral presentations, and the ability to communicate technical material to a broad audience.
  • Ability to see opportunities, learn, and apply that learning to tackle problems and drive innovation.
  • Strong networking, teamwork, and team working skills.

Why Should You Apply?

This is an outstanding opportunity to gain practical experience implementing advanced bioanalytical solutions in a unique industrial setting and establish an understanding of larger pharmaceutical industry operations. In addition, you will assume a lead authorship role on manuscripts with established industry and academic experts.

Ready for an exciting, rewarding challenge? Apply today!
