Psych Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Position Summary

The MSU College of Nursing is looking to fill the position of part time, on campus Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner working in the College's Nurse Practitioner-led clinic. The Psych Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) will provide outpatient psychiatric evaluation and medication management services in the College of Nursing (CON) Nurse Practitioner-led Clinic. The PMHNP will provide psychiatric services to adult and youth clients with behavioral and mental health issues and substance use disorders. The PMHNP will provide intensive clinical medication management services to patients who have chronic, severe, and persistent psychiatric illnesses. The PMHNP will use judgement in assessing patients and evaluating their care needs, form a plan of care to include prescribing appropriate medications, brief psychotherapy interventions, non-pharmacological interventions, referring to individual, group and family counseling, providing referrals to other disciplines as needed, and acting as a liaison for patients with their other health care providers and families. These visits will be in person and may also be virtual visits. The PMHNP will use a scholarly approach to patient care making use of evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement processes to assure quality, safety, and improved patient outcomes. The PMHNP will work independently and in collaboration with the CON NP practice faculty and other interdisciplinary care providers in the clinic. It is an expectation that the PMHNP will serve as a preceptor to graduate nursing students for the MSU College of Nursing.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work such as a Masters in Nursing; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in direct nursing care in a specialized area or a Master's Degree in Nursing; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in direct nursing care in a specialized area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position also requires possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and specialty certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan. Requires certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

  • Minimum of two (2) years clinical practice experience as a PMHNP in an outpatient setting
  • Nurse Practitioner (NP) student precepting experience
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience
  • Experience with Telehealth/virtual visits
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
