Advertised Job Summary:

Under limited supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), this individual will conduct research on emerging vector-borne diseases throughout the Americas. This entomology-based research faculty position will expand the research capacity and program within the Institute for Infectious Disease Translational Research and the ASPH's Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Specifically, this position will serve in a mix of independent and co-investigator roles, depending on grant funding success. This position will perform teaching duties on infectious disease epidemiology, vector-borne diseases or other related public health curriculum, when appropriate.

Required Education and Experience:

The position requires a PhD degree in epidemiology and a MS degree in medical entomology or closely related fields, plus a minimum of 1.5 years of postdoctoral research experience in infectious disease epidemiology and 2 years of applied medical entomology experience working with a governmental vector control agency by the employment start date of.

Strong methodological skills. Undergraduate and graduate-level teaching experience. Rigorous ethical conduct when working with confidential information. Leadership capacity to motivate a diverse workforce.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Formidable working knowledge of medical entomology principles, including taxonomic identification, host-vector pathogen diagnostic assays, and vector-borne disease transmission dynamics.
  • Expertise in advanced biostatistical concepts and application to epidemiologic study analysis.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced academic environment.
  • Proficiency in primary data collection, including in low-and-middle-income countries, and understanding of how to establish a new international research program.
  • Talent in science communication, including performing manuscript writing and scientific presentations.
  • Required to conduct business lawfully and ethically by consistently adhering to compliance policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Practical experience in public health practice or applied epidemiology, such as working with public health agencies or community organizations on disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, or health promotion programs.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential and the ability to lead research projects, supervise research staff, and mentor junior researchers, including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Job Duty:

Contribute to vector-borne disease research within the Institute and Nolan lab through supervision of student research, development of new research studies, and identifying novel research avenues. This position will principally work on mosquito-borne disease and assist in the design and execution of emerging arboviral surveillance studies in Cruzeiro do Sol, Brazil; Columbia, SC, USA; and San Salvador, El Salvador. This position may on occasion, be asked to provide topical knowledge or support for tick or triatomine-based studies.

Prepare research progress reports, maintain accurate and detailed records of laboratory experiments/data collection and share findings via meetings, conferences, and publications. This position will support, at minimum, travel to one national conference annually to present the employee's work. Additional travel and support are contingent upon available research funding. Conference travel is encouraged, but not limited, to the following society's annual meetings: Entomologic Society of America, American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, American Mosquito Control Association and/or the Brazilian Tropical Medicine Society. This position is expected to publish at minimum three first-authored or senior-authored papers annually.

Contribute to the preparation and submission of research grant funding proposals. Acquisition of grant funding is critical to the success of the Institute and the Nolan Lab-this position will be a critical aid in ensuring ongoing extramural funding. Grant development, writing and submission work will range from writing small sections of large center-level grants to writing one's own independent grant applications. Grant training via the USC Propel course is an acceptable part of this job duty and related hours. Specific grant-related tasks will be discussed at weekly meetings with the supervisor to facilitate continued dialogue and progression.

Job Duty:

Lead or co-lead infectious disease epidemiology courses for undergraduate or graduate trainees. Courses may be co-taught along with Epidemiology faculty during the academic calendar year, and independently taught courses may include a Maymester graduate-level big data health science center course. The annual teaching load may vary each year depending on departmental needs. 16% effort is the maximum amount of time in a given year that may be allocated to teaching. In the event of an annual teaching load, this will be discussed in advance at the annual faculty evaluation meeting and any allocation of hours to another job duty will be agreed upon by the supervisor and research assistant professor.
