Iowa Institute of Human Geneticsis seeking a Research Associate to provide informatics analysis support and teaching activities to support computational biology in the Carver College of Medicine. Key areas of responsibilities include conducting research activities/experiments, collecting, analyzing and summarizing data, preparing reports, contributing to manuscripts/publications, administrative and project management, facilities and equipment management.

Percent Time: 100%

Duties to include:

Research:

Perform research activities in a specialized area.

Research literature as requested.

Adapt and perform protocols from the literature.

Critically review literature for the purposes of furthering the research and developing new hypotheses in conjunction with the principal investigator.

Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations:

Perform basic and complex procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocol, assure fidelity to protocols, may propose modifications to protocols and/or assist in the design of experiment protocols.

Design portions of experimental plan.

Monitor, test and evaluate current procedures.

Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications:

Work in collaboration with investigators from the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics and throughout the Carver College of Medicine to provide routine computational and statistical analysis support for processing and interpretation of next-generation sequencing datasets as well as other types of datasets (metabolomics, proteomics, any tabular data).

Assist in preparing publications and presentations.

May contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition.

Present results/finds at team and departmental meetings; may present at local and national meetings.

Evaluate data to establish relevance to the problem being evaluated. Prepare research results for publication in reports, papers, journals and talks.

Administrative and Project Management:

Make recommendations regarding the validity of research subjects and data.

Submit routine IRB, ACURF or similar protocol submissions, if applicable.

Responsible for safety programs by following guidelines and maintaining required documentation in support of safety programs.

Engage in professional development activities in order to stay current with the field of bioinformatics. Discover and learn new methods and their application to data analysis of current projects.

Facilities and Equipment Management:

Coordinate and manage equipment and facilities.

Monitor environmental risks and quality control.

Test new equipment and troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment failures and repairs.

Coordinate software licenses as necessary to complete projects.

Supervision/Staffing:

Provide ongoing training on basic and new lab techniques and protocols for employees.

Lead online workshops (i.e., webinars) that implement these materials. Answer questions and present information in a hands-on training environment.

Adapt or develop, in collaboration with Director of Bioinformatics, teaching and training materials on a variety of skills and competencies in computational biology and bioinformatics.

Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to track progress and assure outcomes are achieved.

May participate in hiring staff and managing the performance of staff to assure staff to assure staff is compliant with UI policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

1 year of experience is required.

Demonstrated experience with computer programming for data analysis in either R or Python.

Experience presenting on scientific topics and supervising student activities.

Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative scientific environment.

Demonstrated ability to meet project deadlines and turnaround times.

Experience with high performance computing clusters and Linux.

Experience visualizing genomic data.

Desirable Qualifications:

Familiarity with short and long-read sequencing technologies.

Familiarity with statistical analysis of NGS data and machine learning / AI methods.

Experience solving problems with python and R, ggplot2, and related packages for data science applications.

Familiarity with human genetics and clinical genetics.

A Masters degree in in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Data Science is desirable.
