Meta Reality Labs Research is looking for scientists and researchers with an interest in sensing algorithm and hardware developments for optical imaging and sensing, machine learning, and computer vision applications, new sensing and computing architectures, and algorithm/hardware co-design.Our internships are twelve (12), to sixteen (16), or twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Research Scientist Intern, Optical Imaging and Sensing (PhD) Responsibilities:

  • Designing, prototyping, characterizing and trouble-shooting for optical imaging and sensing systems.
  • Collaboration with and support of other researchers across various disciplines.
  • Provide feedback and optimizations based on experimental results and theoretical analysis.
  • Communication of research agenda, progress and results with the team.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of independent research experience in optical experimentations, trouble-shootings and optical testing in a lab environment.
  • 2+ years of experience in signal control, light sources and acquisition equipment such as lasers, fiber optics, AWG, signal generators, and oscilloscopes.
  • 1+ years of experience in instrument control, equipment interfacing programing and test automation.
  • 1+ years of programming, simulation and modeling experience with languages such as MATLAB, LabView, Python or C/C++.
  • Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a PhD in Optical Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related scientific field.
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience in fiber optics, lasers, optical testing, characterization and advanced imaging.
  • Knowledge of principles and theories of coherent light sources, imaging system design, optical imaging components and sensors.
  • Experience with optical design tools such as Zemax, FRED, ASAP, Code V, Lumerical FDTD, RSoft or LightTools.
  • Intent to return to a degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.
