Description
Research Specialist II – Research Horticulturist and Collections Manager - MR05UT Gardens, Knoxville is in need of a trained horticulturist to manage the production and maintenance of the living plant collections and research trial production in both a greenhouse and garden setting. The Research Specialist is responsible for oversight in production, planting, management, and performance evaluation of plant research trials; analyzing evaluation data, drawing conclusions; and reporting data to stakeholders; maintaining records for plant collections accreditation and database management. Working collaboratively with the Turfgrass and Horticulture Manager and other UT Gardens team members this position establishes and maintains high curatorial standards and practices for optimum plant health and performance and reports to the interim director of the UT Gardens. Position is also responsible for labeling plants, garden plant mapping, and maintaining plant databases. Familiarity with Arc-GIS and/or IRIS BGbase is helpful in this regard.This is a hands-on position requiring working outdoors in varying weather conditions.  1-2 years of direct hands-on experience in horticulture, landscaping, or garden maintenance and a Bachelor’s Degree in plant sciences, horticulture, or related field is required.

Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills Required:

    Knowledge of best plant health practices: pest management, pruning, basic irrigation techniques including: sowing seed, planting, fertilization, watering, mulching, pest management, pruning, basic irrigation techniques.Knowledge of Latin binomial nomenclature.Ability to create database fields/spreadsheets.Ability to create interpretive and plant i.d. labels.Knowledge of plant identification.Knowledge of best plant health practices, pest management, pruning, basic irrigation techniques.Effective time management and organizational skills.Effective oral and written communication skills.Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.Ability to coordinate and supervise a diverse group of students, interns, volunteers, and staff regarding horticulture management.Ability to be self-motivated working alone or in a group.
