Job Info

School of Medicine Established in 1930, Duke University School of Medicine is the youngest of the nation’s top medical schools. Ranked sixth among medical schools in the nation, the School takes pride in being an inclusive community of outstanding learners, investigators, clinicians, and staff where interdisciplinary collaboration is embraced and great ideas accelerate translation of fundamental scientific discoveries to improve human health locally and around the globe. Composed of more than 2,500 faculty physicians and researchers, more than 1,300 students, and more than 6,000 staff, the Duke University School of Medicine along with the Duke University School of Nursing, Duke University Health System and the Private Diagnostic Clinic (PDC) comprise Duke Health. a world-class academic medical center. The Health System encompasses Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Primary Care, Duke Home and Hospice, Duke Health and Wellness, and multiple affiliations.

Occupational Summary
Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting laboratory tests, experiments and determinations in support of Duke University research operations.

Work Performed
The Naumann laboratory (www.naumannlab.org) at Duke University in the Department of Neurobiology is interested in how neural circuits across the entire brain guide behavior and how individuality manifests within these circuits. To discover how many single neurons collaborate, we use the genetically accessible, translucent zebrafish to map, monitor, and manipulate neuronal activity in the entire brain. We aim to generate brain-scale circuit models of brain function underlying sensorimotor transformations.

Our lab is funded by the NIHBRAIN initiative and uses and develops whole-brain fluorescence two-photon and light-sheet microscopy, optogenetics, holography, high-speed behavioral analysis, CRISPR-Ca s9 genome editing, transgenesis, genotyping, neuroanatomy, real-time image analysis and machine learning.

We are looking for someone passionate about science and with experience or interest in any or all of the follo wing: zebrafish husbandry, molecular biology, especially zebrafish transgenesis, systems neuroscience, two-photonor light-sheet microscopy, data analysis, genetically encoded biosensors, machine learning and data visualization. Our ideal candidate wants to gain hands-on research experie nce, e.g., generating transgenic zebrafish, running behavior and imaging experiments including data analysis of large neural activity imaging and behavioral data sets.

Other tasks will involve
1. breeding transgenic zebrafish lines
2. purchasing of lab equipment, organize lab calendar, maintain a general clean and organized lab environment
3. molecular biology, CRISPR/Cas9 editing, genotyping, and microinjection to generate transgenic fish lines.

We welcome ambitious applicants from a ll backgrounds with enthusiasm for neuroscience and data science, coding skills (e.g., Python, Matlab) or cloning are a plus. Our young, dynamic lab with lively collaborations in Biomedical Engineering and Biostatistics Departments will provide you with many opportunities for training and co-authorships on publications and will prepare and help you to apply to grad or medical school!

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field. Department preference is bachelor's degree required.

Experience
None required above education/training requirement OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
