Occupational Summary

This is a position in a basic science research laboratory that also has ongoing integrated translational and clinical research. Therefore, this position requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to current laboratory needs. Previous wet laboratory experience is preferred but not required. More importantly, this position requires exquisite attention to detail in addition to well-developed organizational and time-management skills. The successful candidate will perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting standardized tests, experiments, and determinations in support of research oriented activities at Duke University.

Work Performed

  • Plan, develop and carry out experiments to examine the role of occupational exposure to food flavoring compounds in the development of obstructive and restrictive lung diseases. These experiments are carried out in part in an animal facility; therefore attention to detail and the ability to follow explicit procedures is required.
  • Plan, develop and carry out experiments in vitro to examine the role of epithelial cells, fibroblasts and other cells in culture in the response to food flavoring compounds.
  • Plan, develop and carry out experiments in vitro to examine the role of epithelial cells, fibroblasts and other cells in culture in the response to EGFR ligands and/or immune factors.
  • Perform whole lung lavage on experimental animals, prepare cytospins and count resulting differentials.
  • Prepare tissue and specimens for histological and biochemical analysis that may include DNA, RNA, immunohistochemistry and protein extraction.
  • Gather information and data through observation and experimentation using routine laboratory methods including but not limited to western analysis, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and RT-PCR.
  • Evaluate and interpret collected information and data.
  • Prepare reports and analyses documenting progress towards the specific goals of the laboratory.
  • Review and remain current with the scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of original procedures and techniques.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
