Job Summary: This position is responsible for the management and operation of an Environmental Health & Safety program.

Additional Department Summary: The EHS Regulatory Manager for Environmental and Laboratory Safety will serve as a resource to and provide support for EHS personnel and campus constituents on related compliance matters. Such compliance matters encompass evaluating hazards; conducting and evaluating testing; and developing, implementing, and maintaining regulatory work processes, best practices, reporting, and training.

A successful candidate for this role must have outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Candidates must communicate effectively with a diverse pool of stakeholders including senior leadership, faculty members, and staff across campus. The candidate must have the ability to present complex issues in a clear and effective manner, verbally or in writing, to a variety of stakeholder groups both internally within EHS, to campus, and externally. Candidates must also have the ability to manage through conflict with excellent negotiation skills, with a calm and steady demeanor in all settings within this role.

This position must provide timely and accurate feedback to campus administration, providing professional knowledge and expertise in support of both environmental and lab safety programs, with a focus on compliance. Administrative tasks, as well as fieldwork, will be required of the EHS Regulatory Specialist. Fieldwork may include, but is not limited to, assessing, analyzing, collecting/collating data and other documentation, to verify, compile and develop recommendations and procedures related to program regulatory compliance. This fieldwork may also include a variety of chemical, physical, and biological tests, and analysis as part of the environmental and laboratory assessment process.

Additionally, candidates for this position must have extensive knowledge and a broad understanding of local, state, and federal regulatory requirements related to both environmental and laboratory issues that may pertain to a University campus setting. Candidates must be able to work in a highly collaborative environment, but also must be self-motivating and able to work independently as well, as the employee conducts day-to-day assessments. Candidates must have the ability to work without supervision and to lead projects following tight deadlines, providing guidance to EHS staff members and the University community. Fostering a strong teamwork ethic is essential as EHS continues to grow and develop the department.

Candidate must be detail-oriented with the ability to identify and apply appropriate compliance/regulatory requirements, policies, and practices in the review of environmental and laboratory safety audits. Advanced writing skills are helpful as the employee must present information in a variety of formats, convey information in a clear and concise style, finding the best way to communicate complex and technical information, in a report, infographic, memo, or any other format outlined by a regulatory agency or requested. The candidate must be skilled in critical decision-making.

This position also provides support to other EHS functions and as such this position is required to maintain communication accessibility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The EHS Regulatory Specialist may be required to respond to emergency situations after hours.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience with hazardous waste, general safety, life safety, environmental hazards, laboratory safety, or occupational safety.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen. Candidate must have the ability to respond to campus in times of emergency response, work outside of standard business hours as required, and maintain communication accessibility 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Physical may be required.

Skills and Knowledge: Candidate must have extensive knowledge and a broad understanding of local, state and federal regulatory requirements related to both environmental and laboratory issues that may pertain to a University campus setting. Experience/training related to regulatory audits or assessments, compliance matters, environmental and/or laboratory experience. Extensive experience in fieldwork related to environmental safety. Works independently with outside consultants, contractors, and legal counsel. Past experience to assemble and assimilate technical information for permitting activities. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Strong Microsoft office computer and organizational skills as thorough documentation is required for documentation and/or reporting. Superior time management skills as this position will require working with a diverse group of people in a professional manner, handling several work tasks concurrently. Excellent interpersonal skills with a high degree of problem-solving skills. The applicants for this position must be able to work with minimal supervision, taking the initiative to evaluate and drive improvements.

Preferred Qualifications: Background in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Health, Environmental Sciences/Management, Occupational Health, or Industrial Hygiene with extensive related work experience in environmental health and safety, or related fieldwork. Experience with an environmental management system. Experience with statistical analysis and preparation of reports, compliance files/records and required documents for regulatory agencies within stated deadlines. Experience performing environmental or laboratory assessments or audits. Experience and sampling/testing fieldwork. Certifications related to environmental, health and safety field work, asbestos abatement, lead-based paint remediation, or mold remediation, Hazwoper Training. Experience with review of tanks, (AST/UST), confined space evaluations, stormwater management plans, injury/illness reviews, or operation of equipment used in the identification or review of chemical, biological, or radiological agents. Experience as part of an emergency response team. Experience in environmental and laboratory safety coupled with leadership and management experience. Other professional certifications or experiences associated with environmental management, lab safety, hazardous waste, chemical inventory or storage, and environmental/laboratory compliance.
