Science Lab Technician Responsibilities/Duties

Class Essential Duties:

Maintain and troubleshoot equipment.

Order and take regular inventory of lab equipment and supplies.

Assist students and faculty in assigned area.

Work with instructors in the operation of assigned area.

Maintain all records pertinent to daily operations.

Assist in the supervision of student aides and temporary/hourly staff.

Prepare chemicals and equipment for use during class.

Assist with and prepare experiments.

Perform in-class instruction on supplemental issues.

Maintain chemical and lab safety standards.

Essential Job Duties

Are intended to be examples of duties and are not intended to be all inclusive. There will be other duties as assigned.


Position Specific Essential Duties:


1.Maintain microbiology stock culture collection used for preparation of class/student cultures.

Prepare all culture media biological strains, reagents and bacteria slides; conform to regulations and policies governing proper handling and disposal of hazardous biological wastes and avoidance of contagion by blood-borne pathogens.

3. Performs preventative maintenance on the department's microscopes, autoclave and biological hoods; maintain and perform any repairs to Anatomy and Physiology models and bones.

4. Maintain a complete department inventory of materials and supplies needed for the biology laboratories.

5. Prepare and submit work orders and coordinate any work with physical plant personal.

6. Maintain paper work related to department purchase requisitions within departmental and college-wide systems guidelines; approve invoice for payment; forward paper work onto the Associate Dean of department, purchasing officer and to the System Account Payable Office when orders are complete and ready for payment.

7. Sound knowledge of all Lab related OSHA and COMAR regulations required.

Required Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science, Bachelors Degree preferred and three years' work experience.

Certification in Safety Precautions and handling Hazardous Materials and conversant with Chemicals Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSD sheets).

Additional Preferred Certifications from ASCP - Board of Certification, American Association of Bioanalysis - Board of Registration.
