The Role

This position is engaged in research and/or product development encompassing primarily one or more of the following engineering disciplines: electronics, electrical, mechanical, and/or chemical. This position is for a secondary propulsion plant fluid systems engineer with expertise in secondary and primary plant fluid systems. This position focuses on supporting BAE engineers with the development of the Next Generation Nuclear Propulsion Plant (NGNPP) secondary plant systems on the Dreadnought Submarine Program from detailed design through build, test and commissioning. The next phase of this program has a specific focus on the transition from detailed design to build and shipyard activities, including support of component procurement and delivery and test.

Sec Prop System Responsibilities

• Major System knowledge - Main/Aux Steam, Steam Drains and Gland steam, Feed and Feed Transfer, Lub Oil and Lub oil Transfer, Main Circ (MSW equivalent) and Shaft seal
• This includes oversight of all valves, pumps, fittings, gauges as part of the system that are not part of the equipment group
• Responsible for maintaining respective system diagrams and system descriptions/supporting calculations
• Responsible for new construction test specifications and SMITE test/trial specifications
• Interface with resolving construction related issues mainly in SMITE in preparation for first of class trials
• Supplier technical management in partnership with supply chain
• Technical correspondence (internal and external) by Inquiry Forms and PQs, which are similar to VIRs / UNSATs
• Change management via Enterprise Change Request (some similarities to ERs)
• Concession management related to the Sec Prop products

• Ability to temporarily relocate to the BAE shipyard in the UK for a period of 24 months (minimum) beginning March 2024
• BS engineering degree and a minimum of 5 years related experience with fluid system engineering
• Candidate must be familiar with the concurrent engineering techniques associated with the Design/Build/Sustain process

Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance is required

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

• Mechanical or chemical engineering degree
• Experience with steam and feed, lube oil and main circ systems is highly desirable
• Knowledge of the S9G and S1B propulsion plant highly desirable
• Mentoring experience is highly recommended
