Job Description

Position Overview

As a Senior Associate, Environmental Compliance and Strategy (ECS), you will support the responsible operation of a utility-scale wind facility in Hawaii which holds state and federal bat take permits. As time allows, this role may also include the opportunity to assist ECS colleagues with bat-related environmental due diligence, planning, permitting, and compliance for a dedicated portfolio of large-scale wind and solar projects across the U.S. To fulfill these duties, you will engage with internal project teams such as Operations and Maintenance and Asset Management departments, and with external parties such as environmental consultants, state and federal resource agencies, and legal counsel. The ideal candidate will be an organized and collaborative self-starter with a keen attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary contact on the ECS team and understand the wildlife permit conditions and project commitments for a wind project in Hawaii.
  • Identify, communicate, and manage project permit compliance activity needs, schedules, and risks. Work collaboratively and efficiently with internal teams and external parties (e.g., consultants) to execute project work on schedule, and develop strategies to address environmental-related issues.
  • Oversee consultants who are advising on and conducting environmental surveys and permit-related planning or documentation. Consultant management duties include proposal review, coordinating administrative items, managing survey timelines, and ensuring survey methodologies follow resource agency guidance and/or project commitments.
  • Maintain an organized and defensible project record to demonstrate compliance with federal and state wildlife permits, regulations, and related commitments.
  • Work with internal and external parties to assist in investigating, developing, and implementing project-specific bat minimization approaches.
  • Manage ongoing project- and mitigation-site monitoring and activity reporting, in coordination with the on-site biologist.
  • Review all technical reports and environmental-related permit or regulatory deliverables. Deliverables typically include but are not limited to: species monitoring studies, project compliance activity summaries, post-construction monitoring studies, research-related papers, and mitigation and adaptive management progress reports.
  • Support creating and maintaining external stakeholder relationships and, in coordination with the Project team, coordinate agency meetings and site visits to ensure compliance with project commitments and permit conditions. Aid in development of responses to agency and stakeholder recommendations and requests which emerge from periodic permit-review meetings.
  • Monitor for and support engagement in environmental policy and regulatory changes that may affect permitting and compliance.
  • Travel to Hawaii as necessary (estimated twice a year), and travel to other locations as necessary (up to 25% in total).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3-6+ years in renewable energy or 7+ years managing responsibilities like those listed above.
  • Experience managing bat-related surveys, planning, agency/stakeholder coordination, and compliance associated with state and/or federal take permits.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and organizational skills, assuring documents and communications are concise and accurate, and project records are organized, complete, and defensible.
  • Self-directed, analytical and detail oriented, with the ability and desire to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and implement internal processes.
  • Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of the Endangered Species Act and familiarity with Hawaii state endangered species regulations.
  • Advanced degree in biological science/natural resources/environmental policy or environmental law degree.
  • Ability to navigate ArcGIS and Google Earth to interpret environmental spatial data and identify potential project risks.

Salary Range

$102,000 - $124,000

Benefits

Eligible for medical, dental, vision, 401(k), bonus, paid time off, etc.
