JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Overview

The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for the design of mechanical components and systems, primarily in the field of polyurethane foam dispensing. They will accomplish this by leading the new product design and development process including ideation, coordination with other disciplines, schedule generation, design for manufacturing analysis, solid modeling of mechanical components, product testing preparation, performing tests and data analysis. Responsibilities also include existing products improvement and any related design, testing, report preparation and other documentation as needed. Coordination and communication with manufacturing partners both local and abroad will also be required.

This position will be based in Fenton, Missouri. The role reports into the Design Engineering Group Leader, located in Baltimore, Maryland. Opportunity exists to work hybrid, with up to two working days per week out of office.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project specific design engineering efforts to bring new products to market, primarily in the field of commercial polyurethane foam dispensing.
  • Utilize SolidWorks 3D CAD software for 3D part modeling, drawing, and assembly creation of the mechanical components.
  • Make initial non-functional prototypes of designs using various methods including 3D printing (both in-house and with outside partners).
  • Create and execute test plans. Test new product designs through various functional tests. Use of various types of laboratory equipment and mechanical hand tools will be required to build the prototypes to test them.
  • Analyze testing data using charts, graphs etc. and report findings in a formal report to your manager and possibly other departments. File all data in a consistent agreed upon format and system for efficient future retrieval.
  • Assist production in troubleshooting issues that may arise with injection molded and purchased parts that may cause assembly or operational problems. Reference purchased part or inspection guidelines and revise as needed.
  • Utilize Microsoft Project to generate accurate program schedules. Maintain schedules on a regular basis to reflect actual status and any scope changes that may be encountered.
  • Perform general lab tasks required to keep a clean and safe laboratory work environment. Train in proper and safe operation of lab equipment.
  • Create representative and accurate drawings for parts and assemblies. Inclusive of performing stack-ups to determine workable dimensioning schemes. Also, apply functional GD&T practices.
  • Work with purchasing to find and qualify vendors for processes new to DAP.
  • Some travel (< 10%) required to domestic and/or global manufacturing plants and vendors.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • 3-5 years on the job experience in a new product design engineering role.
  • 3D CAD design experience and good spatial acuity for designing.
  • Ability to self-direct and work in a small team environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to operate hand tools and various testing equipment.
  • Ability to work with many types of chemicals, both hazardous and non-hazardous.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project and program schedule generation.
Preferred qualifications
  • Formal SolidWorks training and experience.
  • Previous experience in either polyurethane foam or aerosol packaging industry.
