About the Department

This position is in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Chicago (microbiology.uchicago.edu). Basic research is conducted by the Faculty of the Department of Microbiology with goals to decipher virulence and colonization strategies of important microbial pathogens and symbionts including bacteria (Tuberculosis, pathogenic Bacillus, Clostridia, Listeria, Staphylococcus, Yersinia, and symbiotic species including bacteria of the order Bacteroidales) and viruses (bacteriophages, SARS-CoV2, Hepatitis C, Dengue Fever, and several murine retroviruses). In collaboration with the Duchossois Family Institute (Harnessing the Microbiome and Immunity for Human Health), the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, and University of Chicago Medicine, the Microbiology Faculty also investigates the organizing principles of the microbiome, its role in maintaining health and preventing disease, and the development of novel therapies.

Job Summary

This position works collaboratively with faculty, post-docs, and staff to support the pre-award activities for all sponsored projects in the Department of Microbiology.

The position researches new avenues for funding and new grant opportunities.

The position interprets regulations and guidelines of multiple funding agencies with broad and complex guidelines for spending. They reach out to supervisors, University Research Administration, and funding agencies to clarify policies.

Working collaboratively with faculty, the finance coordinator, and URA, is responsible for timely and error-free submission of applications, progress reports, technical reports, Just-In-Time submissions, no-cost extensions, and agency-required re-budgeting.

They are responsible for following up on tasks that require additional research.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specialized support for the research enterprise within a department or unit, including pre-and/or post-award administration for all sponsored activity. Serves as liaison between PIs, University administrative offices, and external agencies.
  • Ensures service and communication to PIs, standardized information, best practices development, and that all faculty and research staff are aware of any new grant policies and changes.
  • Analyzes industry trends and remains current with agency and regulatory changes. Monitors department/unit compliance with University, Divisional and Department policies and procedures and implements corrective actions for issues identified.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:
  • Solid experience and knowledge of accounting, grants and/or conducting audits.
  • Experience working in higher education/university setting.
  • Knowledge of various internal and/or external grant systems.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Intermediate knowledge of technology productivity and collaboration tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat Pro).

Preferred Competencies
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and implement policies and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
