Summary of the group:

The Cell Culture and Fermentation Sciences Group is accountable for cell line development, process development, and process characterization. This group assists in the scale up and technical transfer of processes to different clinical and commercial sites and also supports manufacturing deviations and regulatory submissions as needed. The team will work with bioreactors and genetically modified Chinese hamster ovary cells to produce new drugs to support the pre-clinical portfolio and clinical development with key reagent production.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

• Generate the biological material for preclinical studies, including non-GLP and research studies, using mammalian cells at bioreactor operating scales of up to 36L

• Generate plasmid DNA for transient transfections, as well as develop process improvements for plasmid DNA production

• Optimize the transient transfection technology for production of therapeutic proteins in mammalian cells

• Develop perfusion technology for transient transfection production

• Develop improved chemically-defined media

• Makes detailed observations, analyzes data, and interprets results. Demonstrates scientific rigor in assessing own data and that of others.

Education & Experience Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering or a related field

Experience: Bachelor's and 10+ years, Master's and 8+ years, or PhD and 2+ years of relevant industry experience

Required Skills:

• Experience in a laboratory environment using mammalian cell culture

• Solid understanding of biochemical engineering concepts and biochemical pathways

• Responsible for a wide variety of recombinant protein in mammalian cell lines from stable pools of cells and transient transfections in bioreactors.

• Responsible for suitable processes for small and large-scale recombinant protein production, including feed strategies.

• Responsible for in-house technology for rapid production of protein reagents from transient transfections at multi-liter scale.

• Design and execute experiments as well as troubleshooting.

Desired Skills:

• Plasmid DNA production and process optimization

• Bioreactor operation knowledge of design of experiment (DOE)

• Analysis of data using statistical analysis software such as JMP
