Position Summary:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator. The Senior Systems Administrator will plan, coordinate, deploy and manage complex enterprise systems, processes and related technologies in support of enterprise initiatives including custom developed, patient EHR (Epic) and other vendor data warehouse, custom analytics and reporting systems. Primary duties include providing operational support for database, business intelligence and analytics platforms and solutions built on them to ensure performance, capacity, security and service level expectations are met. This position is responsible for solution review, provisioning system resources, continual monitoring and alert follow-up, disaster mitigation and recovery. Included in this role is full support of server hardware, operating systems, applications and vendor relationship. Research of new and upgrades to existing technologies, review of business value with stakeholders and implementation of new technology is part of this role. Position requires wearing a pager and some 24x7 on-call support.

  • Participate in the architecture and design of departmental and enterprise level healthcare related systems.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and present recommendations and justifications on hardware and software purchases.
  • Collaborate with service owners and vendors to define the scope of requests.
  • Analyzes technical issues, trends and future technical requirements and communicates these to the Manager.
  • Adhere to Institutional Data Access Policy based on data classification levels.
  • Install and maintain enterprise-class Windows servers and all related processes, including backup/restore, security policies and virus protection, tuning, capacity planning, and monitoring of all resources to ensure high availability of all services provided
  • Address operational systems issues including file and share permissions, user accounts and installing applications
  • Participate in release management and change management functions, in coordination with Application Management group
  • Integrate systems, devices and instruments with core enterprise business applications
  • Write procedure documentation for peers and junior staff
  • Write installation and setup documentation for supported systems
  • Write and document test plans for system, device and instrument implementation and maintenance
  • Promote and maintain server patch management practices
  • Monitor capacity and performance
  • Plan and implement software and hardware upgrades
  • Develop scripts for automation of systems tasks
  • Support IIS and Microsoft Windows failover-clusters and related devices.
  • Specify and support VMware vSphere guests
  • Troubleshoot and provide problem resolution for complex server issues
  • Participate in 24 x 7 on-call support rotation as required.
  • Level 3 support - App owner
  • Collaborate with internal customers to ensure internal requirements are met with current and future systems.
  • Collaborate with external vendors to ensure current systems meet implied and contractual specifications and communicate needs for future upgrades and systems
  • Manage and participate in projects as assigned, and work with team members across the organization to deliver project goals
  • Provide mentoring and cross-training of Systems Administration and Service Desk staff

Position Qualifications:

Education Required

Bachelor's degree in MIS, Computer Science, or related degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.

Experience Requirements
  • Typically 5-7 years of experience in IT infrastructure design, implementation and operational support in a complex computing environment
  • Technically fluent in server hardware and Operating Systems, IIS, MS SQL and File Services.
  • Basic knowledge with remote management tools, scripting, server clustering, system backups, and/or software and operating system patch management.
  • Architecture and support of systems in a load balanced and firewalled environment experience
  • Working experience organizing and managing projects and documentation
  • Demonstrated excellence in critical thinking, working independently including autonomous decision-making, time management skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and strong interpersonal skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Tableau administration experience
  • Power BI administration experience
  • Business Objects Enterprise administration experience
  • Familiar with server hardening methodologies and practical implementation experience.
  • Knowledge of Hybrid, Cloud and Multi-cloud strategies and governance for such vendors as Microsoft Azure, AWS and IBM Cloud.
  • PowerShell scripting proficiency
  • Active Directory and Kerberos experience
  • .Net architecture and administration experience
  • Java Application server administration experience
