In this Senior University Counsel position, the attorney will be responsible for providing legal advice to the University on higher education-related matters such as student and academic affairs. Attorney responsibilities include but are not limited to matters relating to academic integrity; disability access and accommodations; student misconduct, discipline and leaves; political activity; student records and privacy; discrimination and sexual misconduct; admissions and financial aid; athletics; diversity initiatives; student organizations; community safety; litigation and pre-litigation disputes and other duties as assigned.This position reports to the Deputy General Counsel and Managing Attorney.

The position requires excellent client service skills and the ability to juggle competing interests and projects. It also requires discretion, flexibility, excellent judgment, collaboration and the ability to understand and manage a broad range of client needs in a constantly changing, cutting-edge academic and medical center environment. The attorney must be able to work independently, while also partnering and working collaboratively with outside counsel and other staff attorneys.

Candidates should have a law degree from an accredited law school and a minimum of eight years of relevant experience gained in private practice or as in-house counsel, ideally in the higher education space and with student affairs experience. Candidate must be a member of the California State Bar or any other State Bar and otherwise qualified and register to practice law in CA as registered in-house counsel upon starting in this role.

Requirements include excellent academic credentials, writing, analytical and communication skills as well as good judgment and a practical approach to solving legal problems. Applicants must be responsive, a collaborative team member, committed to collaborative teamwork, and have a proven record of providing the highest quality client service.

The expected pay range for this position is $250,000-$340,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
