Description:
JOB SUMMARY
Performs interventional peripheral/cardiac vascular or other specialized radiographic procedures under sterile technique in order to aid physicians in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Prepares examination area, positions patients for procedures and operates complex radiographic equipment in accordance with established techniques and routines. Assists physicians as necessary by passing materials, monitoring patient vital signs, taking exposures as directed and optimizing images for review.
JOB DUTIES

1. Actively demonstrates the organization's mission and core values, and conducts oneself at all times in a manner consistent with these values.

2. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information.

3. Prepares examination area by ensuring cleanliness and asceptability of all exposed surfaces, obtaining and arranging angiographic equipment and sterile supplies to be used in procedure, ensuring equipment is in proper operating condition and insuring that imaging chain is working properly.

4. Prepares patients for procedures by positioning patients, applying sterile technique to catheter insertion sites, applying mobilization and sliding devices, etc. Explains procedures to patients to avoid apprehensions and elicit cooperation.

5. Calculates and selects proper technical factors on radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment such as voltage, current, exposure time and focal distance based on factors such as patients' size, physical condition, and suspected pathology.

6. Operates complex radiographic equipment in accordance with established techniques and routines. Maintains competencies of all equipment and imaging techniques in the department, in doing so, sets, adjusts and manipulates electronic controls in order to obtain suitable radiographic exposures.

7. Selects proper film sequences and, as appropriate, proper injection programs to ensure necessary exposures are obtained for diagnostic procedures.

8. Assists physicians and radiologist/cardiologist during procedures by providing materials such as radiopaque substances, monitoring patients' vital signs, taking radiographs, and assisting in administration of contrast media.

9. Ensures radiographic interventional equipment is in proper working order by performing minor repairs. Notifies appropriate personnel of malfunctioning equipment.

10. Schedules radiographic interventional/cardiac catheterization examinations ensuring smooth flow and optimal utilization of equipment, and maintains necessary patient records and files.

11. Requisitions, stores, and inventories approved supplies such as catheters, guide wires, needles, drapes, gowns, gloves, and pharmaceuticals in assigned areas.

12. Verifies patient's identity prior to procedure. Reviews patient's chart to confirm existence of allergies and ensures appropriate preoperative lab and electrocardiograph studies have been carried out, and appropriate preoperative medications have been administered. Checks for blood pressure, pulse, irregularities of heart rhythm, removal of dentures and other processes, and ensures intravenous infusion line is operating properly.

13. Monitors patients' vital signs and electrocardiograph data during procedure including recognition of arrhythmia, heart blockage, and any pattern or morphologic changes. Monitors and attends to patient's comfort during procedure (i.e., emesis, voiding, positioning, respiratory distress, vasovagal reaction, and the like).

14. Assists physician with related functions as circulating assistant during procedure.

15. Operates apparatus outside laboratory such as blood oximeter, densitometer, and so forth in order to assess physiologic parameters. Handles non-sterile equipment including physiologic measuring devices, which come in contact with or are used by patient during procedure. Cleans and prepares equipment and/or catheters for procedures, and evaluates non-mechanical and special supplies for functional integrity.

16. Utilizes critical care thinking to assess, process and report any significant clinical events related to the patient and reports findings to the physician as needed.

17. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.
