About the Opportunity

As a Software Developer and IT Specialist, you will lead the development of next generation robotic user interfaces and assisting in managing the center IT assets. At WVRTC, you will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team to create and test robotic technologies for space robotic missions and technology development. The prime focus of the WVRTC is to support the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Research efforts include supporting pioneering efforts to capture orbiting satellites for refueling and repair to extend the operational life of the asset. The WVRTC also interacts with other entities as a subcontractor with projects supported from GSFC.

This position allows for flexibility in work location, including potential hybrid or remote work / work from home options. Travel to the WVU Campus may need to occur based on organizational needs throughout the year.

What you’ll do:
  • Responsible for designing and developing a user interface for controlling industrial and simulated robots, in support of an in-space assembly demonstration using a lightweight robotic arm. The interface itself will need to incorporate a three-dimensional environment that models the actual working environment. It will be necessary to include various solutions for user interface such as input and outputs elements, overlayed data visualization. Experience with communication protocols, such as TCP/UDP, is necessary as this interface will connect to systems running on other machines.
  • Interact and work closely with the rest of the WVRTC team, he/she will have limited support from other developers and engineers on the team to meet this objective. It may be necessary to develop task lists and coordinate inputs if such assistance is provided.
  • Assist in development in other areas. These include implementing control algorithms, updating and testing existing software, integrating hardware systems, performing software maintenance and so on.  


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or other related. disciplines OR an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in software development and IT management.
  • Strong experience with C/C++ software development.
  • Strong experience with product version control and release management (git).
  • Strong experience with CMake for build automation, testing, packaging, and installation of software.
  • Experience with Latex for generating reports and software-related documentation (e.g. SRS, etc.)
  • Experience developing graphical applications using OpenGL and Vulkan.
  • Experience in maintaining multiple networks and network-related appliances (e.g., Cisco ASA, managed switches, Wi-Fi, etc.)
  • Experience in installing maintaining, updating, hardening Unix-based servers (Linux and Solaris) and related services (Apache web server, Redmine ticketing system, LDAP, DNS, SSL certificates).
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience with writing software for robotic systems and supportive technology.
  • Strong skills in using critical thinking by logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and complex problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of research offices and labs. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Exposure to mechanical parts, electricity, chemicals, and vibration. Responsible to know and comply with all safety procedures.
