BASIC FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

The Automation Scientist plans, prepares and carries out complex automated programming on a variety of instruments. This includes method development, creating liquid classes, and troubleshooting liquid handling instruments from manufacturers such as Hamilton, Tecan, Agilent Technologies, or Perkin Elmer. Activities may be focused individual projects or assignments as a member of a project team. This professional makes solid decisions based on experience, sees issues before they arise and can troubleshoot problems with minimum supervision. Strong individual drive is required.

  • Works cross-functionally with scientists and engineers to transition manual protocols to automated procedures, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and next generation sequencing (NGS) procedures.
  • Perform method development, teach labware positions, create liquid classes, optimizations, and perform testing on laboratory automation. This will include method development of liquid handling instruments from manufacturers such as Hamilton, Tecan, Agilent Technologies or Perkin Elmer.
  • Routinely operates liquid handling instruments and implements performance monitoring and maintenance.
  • Identifies instrument performance issues, troubleshoots, investigates alternatives, recommends possible courses of action, and implements as appropriate
  • Continually optimizing the performance of existing liquid handling programs based on data and end-user requirements.
  • Reports status of assigned projects through the preparation of detailed reports and documentation that summarize results.
  • Works within established parameters on individual assignments, on project teams for longer-term projects and as a technical leader with other team members.
  • Prepare training material and conduct technical transfer to operations users on method and maintenance of automated systems.
  • Maintains knowledge of technological developments that may assist in the completion of an assignment or lead to new products, processes or procedures by reading current literature.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required Work Experience:

Bachelor's degree Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related scientific discipline.

3+ years experience with NGS assays and liquid handling method development.

2+ years experience with complex Liquid Handler software (e.g. Venus, EVOware) or Scheduling software (e.g. GBG, Cellario)

Preferred Work Experience:

GMP/QSR experience.

Knowledge:

Knowledgeable in the use of common laboratory equipment and safe chemical handling. Requires a thorough knowledge of related products and technologies gained through developmental experience in an academic or industrial setting.
