Job Title:  Sr. Director, Privacy and Data Protection

Primary Function of Position:  Intuitive is looking for an experienced senior privacy and data protection attorney to join our legal team in the Sunnyvale, CA office. Directly reporting to our Sr. Vice President, General Counsel, and CCO, this position will lead a team of subject matter experts on all aspects of both privacy laws as well as data use issues. This position will lead global privacy and data protection efforts in support of product and service development, functional and partner needs, privacy practices, and privacy compliance accountability.

Roles & Responsibilities: This is a senior position with program ownership in addition to individual contribution. The successful candidate will have extensive experience with practical privacy advice for product and application development, assessing and advising on real-world privacy situations, supporting strategic Intuitive decisions, acting as the primary privacy SME, as well as a track record of successful program, resource and team management.

  • Ethics: Strong sense of ethics and ensuring actions not only can be done, but also should be done
  • Privacy Compliance: Continually improve the Intuitive privacy program, identifying and closing gaps, adapting to new situations, and monitoring the implementation
  • Subject Matter Expert: Advise on all aspects of global privacy laws and regulations, including healthcare, state, regional, trends in enforcement, and new or changed laws; understand and advise on Intuitive’s data position and supporting contracts
  • Development Advice: Counsel development teams for new products and services from concept to operation
  • Stakeholder / Business Goal Coordination: Develop relationships throughout Intuitive, set strategic initiatives and objectives, define appropriate business integration, and deliver comprehensive solutions
  • Organizational Development: Manage a team of privacy professionals through mentorship, training, and feedback; Participate in the leadership of the Legal Department
  • Budget Management: Provide excellent stewardship of Intuitive finances from forecasting to vendor utilization
  • Regional Integration: Work closely with regional counsel to develop global privacy and data protection approaches
  • Training: Develop and deliver training where needed throughout Intuitive
  • Efficiency Improvements: Update playbook and templates for repeat documents and terms in coordinate with stakeholders
  • Metrics: Develop and track metrics to aid dashboard visualization of program success

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training: The successful candidate will have extensive experience in practical application of privacy and data protection knowledge to real-world situations, preferably in a commercial / medical device setting.

  • Member of the California bar
  • 12+ years of privacy experience with global privacy program management, medical device company experience preferred, including incident response, data (whether or not identifiable) collection and usage, pilot and other development programs, and clear privacy notice development
  • Strong analytical and problem-resolution skills with the ability to balance business needs with legal risks, including strong contract development skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of company business practices and the interplay between business functions such as engineering, marketing, and sales
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly and succinctly communicate legal advice, solicit input and gather information verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated cross-functional communication and working with teams at various levels of an international organization
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, preferably with experience working with international clientele
  • Ability to work autonomously and prioritize multiple matters simultaneously in a demanding, fast-paced environment, and managing others for the same, while including others in decision-making or information loops when necessary
  • Working knowledge of technology business models and familiarity with operational security issues preferred
  • Experience with hospital / healthcare company negotiation required
  • Project management and compliance experience preferred
  • Relevant certifications, technical background, and language skills a plus
  • Must be able to work on-site at least 3-4 days a week
