Group/Division Summary: The Materials and Structural Analysis (MSD) Electron Microscopy (EM) business enables customers to find meaningful answers to questions that accelerate breakthrough discoveries, increase efficiency, and ultimately change the world. The MSD EM business designs, manufactures, and supports the broadest range of high- performance microscopy workflows that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales. Combining hardware and software expertise in electron, ion, and light microscopy with deep application knowledge in the materials science, life sciences, semiconductor, and natural resources markets, the worldwide Electron Microscopy employees are dedicated to customers' pursuit of discovery and resolution of global challenges.

Position Summary

The Sr Director, Strategy and Marketing, has responsibility for driving growth for the division by defining strategy, performing business development and delivering divisional marketing through collaboration with the commercial and business unit marketing teams. This position reports into the Vice President Commercial and Strategy and works closely with the Business Units to ensure that marketing initiatives are developing the accurate funnel motion to develop pipeline that ensures the Division's growth. The role also works with the cross functional team including R&D leadership to develop and execute the five-year strategic plan including sound investment recommendations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Own the formal strategic planning (STRAP) process, including coordinating input and analysis of possible initiatives and development of presentations in support with the Business Unit leaders and R&D.
  • Studies end market opportunities for technology roadmap improvement recommendations.
  • Direct the scope, timeline, budget, resources and milestones for strategic projects.
  • Monitor and analyze the competitive space, consider impacts on strategic positioning and disruption opportunities.
M&A
  • Identify, screen, analyze and recommend M&A targets, license and partnering opportunities to grow the business and deliver strong returns on capital.
  • Develop strategic rationale for individual deals and achieve internal sign-off.
  • Structure and facilitate to close significant and complex deals in partnership with corporate development.
  • Prepare, evaluate and present robust financial modeling and analyses to value projects and acquisitions.
  • Track post-deal success of deals.
Marketing
  • Deliver on the mission to fill sales pipeline through valuable leads generated by team tactics cooperating with the Business Units.
  • Provide strategic direction, operational oversight and accountability, and remove barriers to execution.
  • Be the champion for the Divisional Marketing team on the Divisional Leadership Team, provide team leadership, and enable team career development.
Minimum Qualifications/ Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree. Advanced technical degree and / or MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years in leading business or strategic business planning or business development.
  • 5+ years successfully leading business strategy, corporate development projects.
  • 5+ years of experience in life sciences, material sciences or semiconductor spaces.
  • Must have a proven track record of transaction experience including M&A, partnership and co-creation or other types of collaborative partnerships.
  • Understanding of domain/industry and ability to deliver insightful analysis/modeling to uncover market opportunities.
  • Results-oriented, high-energy, self-starter with high level of personal initiative and a continuous improvement mentality.
  • Strong presentation, external relationship development and cultivation skills.
  • Inspiring leader and strategic problem solver balanced with operational and practical implementation skills.
  • Role model in developing talent.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to communicate complex business issues/content to leadership at varying levels.
  • Experience in a consultancy or investment banking a plus.
  • Business Marketing leadership experience a plus.
