Sr. Pr. ME Product Engineering Manager

Position Summary

The Senior Principal Mechanical Engineering Product Engineering Manager (Sr. Pr. MEPE Mgr) will work as a member of the research and development team in the design, development, testing, and integration of electro-mechanical, thermal, and optical sub-systems into new, innovative diagnostic products. The Sr. Pr. MEPE Mgr will bring to the table, best practices, new development strategies and advanced technical concepts to solve complex problems. The Sr. Pr. MEPE Mgr will be part of a thorough stage gate development process and be expected to work with the development team to resolve all assigned technical issues that arise during product development. The Sr. Pr. MEPE Mgr will work as part of a cross-functional team within the Veterinary Medicine Research and Development (VMRD) organization, including other Engineers, Quality, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Suppliers, under the direction of VMRD leadership. The person in this position will often coordinate the design efforts of other engineers and designers during a project, although no specific supervisory responsibilities are attached to the job.

A Sr. Pr. MEPE Mgr oversees the team for primary design responsibility from concept to the completion of transfer to production. The Sr. Pr. MEPE Mgr will lead focused small teams ensuring product performance is met while maturing the product for production launch. This will ensure that the operations team is successful in manufacturing readiness, managing the supply chain, initial install/implementation oversight in customer facilities, and continuing engineering support (issue resolution) after launch.

Responsibilities

• Carry the leadership role of the product engineering effort in the co-development process with Manufacturing and Quality such that product maturity is achieved through product launch and supply base development.

• Provide sound technical project leadership to cross-functional product development teams (internal and external). Create alignment both withing the technical team and across the various business functions.

• Responsible for proper engineering transfer of product design release and collaborative change management process into the PLM and SAP systems.
• Responsible for the system level conceptual design & development process through completion of the product launch milestone of the stage gate process. Also participates in ensuring that designs can be implemented into a viable product, in a support role, starting at the initial development phase.
• Grow and maintain technical knowledge of in-vitro diagnostic devices.
• Work with Manufacturing to consider high volume assembly process in design concepts (Design for Manufacturability). Analyze and recommend improvements of production processes and methods to facilitate cost reduction and quality improvement.
• Participate in the oversight of contract product development (external OEM's) partners
• Participate in the design and development of all electro-mechanical and thermodynamic control components required by product requirements, while understanding the interface to electrical control systems and underlying biological process needs.
• Prepare presentation materials for stage gate development activities and efforts.
• Participate in the development and implement mechanical, electrical, and system concept design, perform sensitivity analysis, timing analysis, or other design analysis.
• Assessment of system level risks, and proposing, evaluating, and implementing mitigations.
• Ensure designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, and international standards.
• Proficient in breaking down complex technical situations in an understandable way.
• Work cross functionally in a global organization, deploy engineering best practices in the context of a stage-gate development process, and navigate satisfying product technical specifications as prescribed by customer and market requirements.
• Participate in system engineering for complex electromechanical/thermodynamic/optical systems to define product specifications and controls interactions of each system.
• Analyze and recommend corrective actions in case of any design issues.
• Extensive interaction with suppliers in design, analysis, and other technical liaison requirements.
• As required, produce (or update) detailed drawings, BOMs and release documents for the above design activities.

Education & Experience

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, MSME/MSEE preferred. Minimum of 15 years demonstrated engineering experience in a complex engineered product development environment. Quality Management System understanding a must.
• 10 years of experience in developing animal health devices/systems/products
• 15 years of experience working with Design and Implementation teams, Operations (Manufacturing, Quality, Metrology) and suppliers from an engineering, technical perspective.
• 3 to 5 years of experience leading or managing, as a product development team member

Technical Skill Requirements

• Recent training in a QMS. Understanding of APQP and PPAP a plus.

• SAP understanding, Engineering Change Management in PLM environment
• Root cause analysis techniques and documentation.
• Demonstrated proficiency in engineering specifications, including GD&T and design for automated equipment.
• In-depth knowledge of DFM/DMA, materials and manufacturing/construction techniques.
• Up-to-date experience with SolidWorks CAD (CSWP certification preferred), Solidworks PDM.
• Demonstrated experience in critical thinking and problem-solving skills, planning and organizing, decision-making
• Demonstrated experience in development of electromechanical product assemblies, including PCBAs, is desirable
• Excellent communication skills, influencing, leading by example and teamwork capabilities
