Primary Function of Position:

The Future Forward Research group within Intuitive Surgical (IS) has an exciting opportunity to join the team driving future strategies. The team has an opening for a Sr Research Engineer that will contribute to the exploration, development, and incubation of innovative new products, concepts and businesses to improve current or create new technologies that advance medical treatments for patients around the globe, with an emphasis on mechanical engineering, including innovative new platform and tool development.

The ideal candidate has successful experience identifying, evaluating and incubating new technologies, managing highly collaborative project and program teams, engages with excellent communication skills, and proficiently balances independent creativity and curiosity, with solid business acumen.

The ability to learn rapidly, as well as to drive creative—yet practical—solutions from rough requirements are essential in this position. This role requires and encourages applying instincts, curiosity and domain expertise, to evaluate and review nascent medical technologies.

In addition to the above, this role will leverage and consult with with other members of the Research, Engineering, Product, Field Ops, and Marketing groups to identify inspired insights leading to breakthrough innovations.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven strong mechanical engineering background and domain experience in product technology review, development and go-to-business strategy.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with cross functional company Research & Development teams.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurship, curiosity, and passion for working on the next generation medical technologies that deliver immediate impact to patients in need.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with cross functional Engineering, Product, Field ops and Research & Development teams.
  • Ambition, motivation and excitement to drive every aspect of new product strategy, from reviewing and acquiring user needs, to building early prototypes to launching a product and continual support of the product pre and launch.
  • Courage and confidence to drive independent partner-facing business development and product management activities, to provide segment expertise and to ensure integration and translation of customer requirements into research and development processes.
  • Understanding and process expertise to introduce product ideas from target markets with strong value proposition and differentiation and business justification.
  • Capable of managing multiple internal R&D projects, and thrives in a highly entrepreneurial, fast-paced, start-up-like environment.
  • The ability to learn rapidly, as well as to drive to creative—yet practical—solutions from rough requirements are essential in this position.
  • Strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward /success with peers from all teams.
  • Ability to lead project teams, define and manage development pathways, and document product requirements clearly.
  • Skills and comfort negotiating, driving and maintaining relationships with researchers in the field as consultants. 

Desired Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the medical device industry, or relevant advanced technology industry.
  • Minimum  BS/MS/PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Bioengineering and/or a related fields.
  • Experience working in a distributed, matrixed environment, able to influence peers at all  levels.
  • Significant experience in working with customer, partner, end user facing activities, especially involving review of new and complex technical products.
  • Experience working in global markets, including US, EU, and Asia.
  • Experience working with startups and developers of medical device technology.
  • Highly independent, self-starter with an ability to take input from all levels of the organization teams to create clear and effective presentations.
  • Must exhibit positive, professional demeanor in all communications; must maintain effective working relationships with internal clients
  • Travel 20%
  • Comfort and ability to view/observe live medical surgeries and medical procedures.
