Position Overview

The Senior Principal Scientist will build a deep scientific capability within Novelis R&D to ensure the organization maintains and grows the scientific knowledge, skills, and ability to accelerate innovation and anticipate emerging customer needs. In this new role, the incumbent is responsible for mentoring scientific and engineering talent, identifying, and ensuring cutting edge capability in existing and emerging scientific disciplines critical to Novelis. The incumbent will also serve as the chief scientific advisor to the Director of R&D Americas. Key deliverables include the following

Responsibilities & Qualifications
Responsibilities

  • Conceive, plan and direct research and other activity that aligns the core scientific knowledge and direction of the enabling science program with emerging scientific trends and commercial opportunities. Propose and develop plans for capital expenditures and ensure alignment between personnel and equipment capabilities for maximum impact of new assets. Partner with universities and other external resources to accomplish the vision.
  • Supervise industrial, market and government scientific trends, connect R&D personnel with key scientists and thought leaders, identify internal and external funding opportunities and support R&D scientists in their proposal preparation, propose and initiate collaboration opportunities with customers, competitors, academia and national laboratories.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the R&D scientists and engineers on the team and ensure scientific depth and quality of their exploratory work. Promote leadership development, build technical skills throughout the organization, and help drive a culture of accountability and high-performance science delivery.
  • Provide scientific knowledge to the Corporation, especially the North American region, to tackle problems, scope projects and other work and drive the implementation of new process and product innovations at an accelerating pace.
  • Represents Novelis at important industry conferences bringing new technology information into the business
  • Advise the Director of R&D Americas and his/her staff on scientific issues.
  • Proactively identify and protect intellectual property during development and discovery.
Qualifications:
  • PhD in Material Science or related discipline with 20 or more years of relevant, specialized experience
  • Deep knowledge of aluminum product development and the associated science and technology, with emphasis on alloy design and process innovation, including innovative surfaces and coatings.
  • Track record of scientific achievement and linkage to innovation. Recognized as a global expert and thought leader in aluminum technology and application.
  • Outstanding intellectual curiosity for emerging technology, trends and opportunities around the world relevant to sophisticated materials and engineered systems.
  • Proven track record showing successful EHS standards and implementation of initiatives
  • Experience leading diverse scientific teams, preferably including multiple functions and areas of expertise. Must be able to influence, lead and empower others in a cross-functional/matrix organization. Must display outstanding integrity, as well as influencing, leadership development, and consensus building skills.
