Sr. Research Specialist
The Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery is seeking a Senior Research Specialist who will join the basic and translational laboratory of the PI Dr. Hee Cheol Cho.

The Senior Research Specialist will be a member of the research team at the Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center, studying the biology and pathophysiology of cardiac conduction system and developing therapeutics to test in small and large animal models. The candidate will gain research expertise in somatic cell reprogramming as well as human pluripotent stem cell biology as it relates to cardiac lineage differentiation. The candidate will work under limited supervision and will plan and carry out experiments according to research project priorities set by the PI.




General Expectations

  • Generates and implements standard operating procedures for small an large animal preclinical studies according to the institutional guidelines.
  • Records and maintains accurate, clear and detailed experimental and data records in hard copy and electronically.
  • Trains junior research staff and students to develop their.
  • Follows established lab procedures and protocols precisely to perform experiments.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Uses sterile techniques as required.
  • Operates and maintains sophisticated lab equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with other researchers.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


  • Perform rodent surgeries, including thoracotomy, ablation of cardiac conduction system, ligation of coronary vasculature, echocardiography, trans-aortic constriction, implantation of telemetry and osmotic mini-pump.
  • Maintain and derive transgenic mouse colonies, including design of transgenic animal creation as well as breeding and genotyping of transgenic animals.
  • Coordinates and participates in the large animal preclinical studies as needed.
  • Generate, maintain and organize animal research-related regulatory documents, according to the institutional, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Manage and keep detailed inventory of animal resources as well as animal research-related budget items, including expense overviews, facility charges and purchase records for each project.
  • Analyzes data and prepares figures and graphs for research projects and/or for original research manuscript preparations.
  • Presents weekly progress with slides to the PI, and participates in the research progress discussion at the lab meetings.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Four years experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
