The Elsevier design team is a cross-discipline group of over 70 designers in Asia, Europe, and the US working across a wide range of digital information products and tools. The role

Digital Commons is Elsevier's premier suite of digital asset management and repository solutions supporting the research and scholarship ambitions of academic institutions.

The suite includes the following solutions:
  • Digital Commons IR: the leading institutional repository allowing 600+ institutions to digitally archive and showcase research and scholarly outputs by their faculty members and students
  • Digital Commons Exhibits: the new system allowing any institution to craft amazing-looking, "Louvre-quality" exhibits and narratives to highlight their unique heritage and achievements
  • Digital Commons Journals: the best-in-class platform for 2,500+ open access journals to grow their global visibility and reputation
  • Digital Commons Data: the innovative institutional data repository built to manage and publish research datasets

As Senior UX Designer, you will be the lead designer for Digital Commons IR and Digital Commons Exhibits. As such you will experience the full range of design scenarios: evolving, optimizing, or re-imagining workflows and designs for the millions of users that visit Digital Commons IR already; and studying, testing, and bringing to life brand new experiences for Digital Commons Exhibits features.

You will partner with dedicated squads for each of these solutions, sharing UX and design insights with Product and Technology leads as you iterate aggressively and agilely on each new opportunity.

What you'll be doing
  • Own and carry out all design work for one or more Agile development teams working on Digital Commons
  • Work hand in hand with product managers to define the roadmap and backlog
  • Works closely with developers to integrity check code and ensure consistent, high-quality, accessible UI implementation
  • Run workshops, ideate and prototype quickly, produce detailed design deliverables, and work alongside product managers, developers and QAs to ship your designs into production
  • Ensure that the product design meets user needs, is aligned with wider product and business goals, and is in line with our front-end and back-end technologies
  • Champion users throughout the design process. Plan user tests, surveys, and experiments. Develop a deep understanding of user needs. Share insights with your team. Build empathy for users across the organisation
  • Create concept designs for new products or features, taking them from discovery to implementation
  • Collaborate with other designers within the product you work on, and designers that focus on different products across Elsevier, to align experiences within- and across different products
  • Build good working relationships with product and technology staff at all levels to ensure strategic alignment and effective working processes.

What we're looking for
  • You have at least five years design experience and a broad UX skillset covering an understanding of user research, user experience and especially strong skills in user interface design
  • You have a strong portfolio showing experience designing shipped products that meet user needs, product requirements, and business goals
  • You have great attention to detail and can produce high-fidelity designs and prototypes using Figma
  • You can build on the work of other designers, using an existing pattern library and contributing to it
  • You have a deep understanding of how brands are extended and integrated into a wide range of visual contexts
  • You understand how to develop short-term and long-term visual design roadmaps
  • You are comfortable presenting & discussing your work to other designers and providing constructive feedback as part of the Institutional Products Portfolio design team
  • You know how design fits in an Agile environment and can work closely with product managers, developers, and QAs
  • You are an excellent communicator who can present and explain the rationale behind designs to a wide range of stakeholders
  • You are motivated, proactive, flexible, pragmatic, and good at time management and prioritization. You want to make things better. You find solutions to problems. You understand how to produce real-world designs given time and technical constraints.
  • You have hands-on experience setting user research goals and analyzing user research outputs
  • You have hands-on experience conducting user research and usability testing
  • (Nice to have) Experience working in-house in a large organization
  • (Nice to have) Experience working with academics or researchers
  • (Nice to have) Experience working with machine learning and data scientists

The team is currently trialing new post-covid ways of working. Some of our team members work in the San Francisco Bay Area, affording some in-person collaboration. But many work remotely. In all cases, we allow each team the autonomy to figure out what working arrangements are best to achieve business goals and support each team member's lifestyle.
