ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Staff Attorney in the Women#39;s Rights Project of the ACLU's National office in New York, NY.

Since its founding by Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1972, the ACLU's Women's Rights Project has been a trailblazer in fighting for gender equity under law. We engage in systemic legal reform to ensure that everyone has the freedom to live, work, and learn free from stereotypes, harassment, and violence based on sex. Our current priorities include assuring safe and stable housing for women and families during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, removing barriers to workplace equality for women, and eliminating sexual harassment and assault in our nation's schools.

Reporting to the Project Director, the Staff Attorneyamp;nbsp;will be responsible for litigation, advocacy, and public education to dismantle patriarchy and guarantee all the freedom to thrive regardless of gender.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Litigating in state and federal courts, including appellate courts, throughout the country, including researching and drafting pleadings and briefs
  • Developing strategies and litigation to advance WRP priorities
  • Providing technical assistance and expert legal advice to ACLU affiliates, cooperating attorneys, and others
  • Collaborating with staff across the organization, including in other Projects within the ACLU's Legal Department, Communications, Affiliate Support and Advocacy, the Washington Legislative Office and state affiliates
  • Conducting outreach to national, state, and community partners to build coalitions and further advocacy goals
  • Engaging in public speaking and articulating ACLU views to a variety of audiences
  • Supervising legal fellows, interns, legal administrative assistants, and paralegals


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. degree
  • Bar membership permitting practice in New York
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, civil rights, and gender equity
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a wide range of people and foster a team environment
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytic skills
  • Demonstrated ability to write and to speak clearly and persuasively
  • Self-motivated, diligent, and able to meet strict deadlines while under pressure
  • Ability to travel
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts


PREFERREDamp;nbsp;QUALIFICATIONS

• At least three years of litigation experience, preferably in federal court
