JOB SUMMARY

This person will play a leading role in the evaluation and the commercialization of technology across TSI's portfolio of existing and emerging product spaces, and will serve as an expert resource for engineers and technical staff. Among other skills, this person requires a strong working knowledge of gas speciation techniques, mathematical modeling tools, electronics, electro-optics, laserphysics, light scattering theory, sensor technology and metrology. Among other tasks, the applied physicist will work with multi-disciplinary design teams to define technical requirements, determine feasibility, and lay out and maintain a technology roadmap for future products. This person will also provide consulting across the organization to address problems and recommend solutions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Support existing projects and contribute ideas to improve the company's core competency in the areas of instrumentation design, electronic sensors, chemical and gas sensors, optical sensors, lasers, spectrometers, fluid measurements, particle counting and sizing.
  • Evaluate existing methods and develop improved methods for sensors, measurements and instrumentation especially related to "Internet of Things (IOT)" sensor to cloud support.
  • Participate on project teams and attend technical reviews offering insights on detection possibilities.
  • Keep active in the fields of interest by reviewing literature, interacting with existing and potential collaborators, and networking with industrial and academic colleagues.
  • Periodically publish papers and generate patent applications relating to the company's measurement needs.
  • Work with leaders in the field to develop and implement advanced measurement techniques. This can include working from published literature or directly with developers of licensed technologies.
  • Evaluate measurement concepts and algorithms for merit and demonstrate ability to convert theoretical concepts into cost-effective, manufacturable instruments.
  • Generate theoretical models to simulate instrument performance and guide system design choices.
  • Develop and execute feasibility, verification, and validation subsystem and system level test plans.
  • Perform hands-on lab work and mentor technicians on performing tests, documenting test results, and providing a physics-based explanation of what is being tested.
  • Complete other assignments and special projects as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED
  • PhD in applied physics, mechanical engineering or similar field from an established research institution
  • Strong background in gas measurement techniques and application (i.e. NDIR, electro-chemical, PID, GC, and FTIR)
  • Electro-optics and laser physics as applied to instrumentation
  • Instrumentation design, electronic sensors, chemical and gas sensors, optical sensors
  • Software coding experience in C, C++, C# or similar language
  • Experience using toolssuch asMATLAB, Python, R, or similar to generate multidimensional models and perform data analysis and visualization
  • Understand problems and known solutions in detecting, sizing and counting aerosol particles
  • Strong working knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer
  • Familiarity with standard laboratory safety practices
  • Experience serving as an expert resource for instrumentation development projects
  • Demonstrated capability to lead and influence technical teams and individuals in addition to senior level management on technical direction
