The Center for Leadership & Involvement serves as the core of the co-curricular experience at the University of Chicago. CLI plays a formative role in the Campus and Student Life goal of creating a comprehensive and integrated network of services that support the academic mission and facilitate student learning, engagement, and success.

Job Summary

The Student Involvement Advisor serves as a resource for student leaders, supports organizational development, and creates and executes staff-driven programming that promotes a vibrant campus culture. As a member of the Center for Leadership and Involvement, the Student Involvement Advisor supports the mission and vision of the unit, by working with students and staff to encourage involvement in student organizations, various programs, and overall student life at the University of Chicago. This Student Involvement Advisor will develop and implement all CLI staff driven programming initiatives (including major Orientation events), advise a diverse portfolio of Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs), and manage the operation of our Student Activity Center.
The job administers a range of programs, events, and student activities. Assists in the development and implementation of orientation programming for incoming students and other programming that fosters student communities. Performs analysis of financial operations that support all recognized student organizations with moderate guidance from others.


  • Advises and supports a diverse portfolio of student organizations. For the assigned student organizations, this could include, but is not limited to, offering programming advice and assistance, mentoring organizational leadership, attending organizational meetings and events, assessing organizational risk and ensuring compliance with University policy, developing training opportunities and materials, promoting financial competency through fiscal management accountability and skills development, and providing connection to campus resources.
  • Develops the CLI staff-driven programming calendar to engage students outside of the classroom with the goals of building community, connecting students to CLI resources, and providing access to cultural and arts experiences in the city.
  • Work in collaboration with central Campus and Student Life, as well as multiple campus partners in the development and implementation of activities in support of major University traditions, including the management of several University Orientation and Homecoming activities.
  • Manages the budget and the day-to-day operations of the Student Activities Center including; staffing, maintenance, and operation of the space; serving as an informational resource; and the administration of copy charges, ordering & distribution of general supplies. This position will also hire, train, mentor and supervise three-five student employees, called Student Activities Center Assistants (SACAs), who staff the space during business hours.
  • Collaborates with staff to create a robust communication and web presence strategy for CLI initiatives through the development and publishing of content on the departmental website and social media platforms highlighting student involvement. This position will be responsible for the development of departmental marketing materials and will hire, train, and supervise a student Graphic Designer to support in these efforts.
  • Serves as a member of the Center for Leadership and Involvement staff and assist with various office programs and projects. This includes assisting with other Campus and Student Life programs, RSO events, and other duties as assigned.
  • Advises, supports, and recommends concepts for programming to leaders of various organizations and programs.
  • Coordinates with the students and staff to develop activities, programs, and initiatives related to student life, and/or community involvement. Develops and implements straightforward programming.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's and Master's degree.
  • Bachelor's degree in liberal arts field.
  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or student personnel.

  • Demonstrated success in working with diverse and complex student organizations.
  • Experience in working with students and advising student organizations in a student affairs or student life environment.
  • Event planning experience (vendor management, contract overview, etc).
  • Experience in organizational bookkeeping or budget management.
  • Experience in the preparation and presentation of workshops desired.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and conflict resolution techniques.
  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently and carry out assignments and projects without detailed instructions.
  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to understand the needs of the University of Chicago community and work with students, faculty and staff in a wide array of situations is essential.

Working Conditions
  • The candidate must have the flexibility to work hours and availability to attend to emergent situations on campus as needed and must be willing to work some evenings and weekends.
