Vertiv is hiring a System Failure Analysis Engineer to perform Customer Root Cause Analysis for Vertiv UPS and Power systems. This includes analysis of site failures, field findings, define factory parts testing requirements, coordinate supplier or third-party lab analysis, review test results, and develop final report with conclusions and recommendations for both the customer and for Vertiv internal quality or design improvements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Generate Root Cause Analysis reports for UPS systems.
  • Review all pertinent data for site failures including, but not limited to repairs and findings from field engineers, alarm downloads, other site monitoring data, service history, site configuration, and load profile.
  • Perform site visits as directed to aid in the failure analysis process during the repair by field engineers.
  • Based on symptom analysis, identify primary failed components for factory testing to determine the root cause of the failure. Write the test scripts for the Vertiv factory test technicians, follow up on the test results, and identify further testing as required to arrive at a root cause.
  • Engage parts suppliers if necessary to further identify the root cause of a component failure and identify corrective actions. Maintain contact with the supplier's engineering and quality associates during the analysis process to ensure the results meet Vertiv' s goal of identifying the root cause.
  • Investigate the use of third-party testing labs and offer recommended test script to further aid in determining the cause of the component failure.
  • Use fish-bone analysis, and other similar tools, to identify all possible causes for a failure and communicate the results in the customer-facing report.
  • Work closely with Vertiv Engineering to define and test computer simulation models as necessary, using MATLAB and Simulink, to aid in the root cause analysis.
  • Complete Preliminary, Interim, Final, and Follow-up customer reports including details on all parts analysis, log or site data analysis, conclusions as to root cause of the site failure, and recommended corrective actions (site, Vertiv internal, and supplier).
  • Complete 8D analysis, with supporting documentation, if required.
  • Attend customer conference calls or site visits (if required) to explain failures and findings.
  • Provide technical consultation to field personnel, other Power Technical
  • Support associates, Vertiv engineering or quality associates.
  • Compile and monitor failure analysis data and identify repeated failure trends. Offer recommendations for continuous improvement. This includes improvements and proactive actions for design of Vertiv products, manufacturing processes, and supplier issues.
  • Report regularly to Vertiv Services, engineering, and quality departments on failure trends and outstanding actions.
  • Participate in product performance reviews including weekly Uptime, and cross-functional (internal Vertiv) conference calls.
  • Attend Vertiv product training to gain familiarity with both new and legacy UPS and Power equipment.
  • Participate in supplier quality audits as directed.
  • Occasional travel is required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 4-year technical degree in electrical or electronic engineering; master's degree and/or Professional engineer (PE) certification is a plus
  • 5+ years of UPS or Power industry experience
  • 2+ years of specific experience in investigative analysis
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Knowledgeable in quality system processes, such as 8D Analysis, FMEA, Six Sigma, Kepner Tregoe
  • Proficient in use and analysis of data from test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multi-channel data recorders, and power quality meters
  • Familiar with reliability metrics
  • Knowledge of experience with manufacturing processes
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Occasional on-call phone support
