Under the general direction of the GIS & BI Manager, the Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst gathers company and public data and compiles it into meaningful reports, advanced visualizations, and dashboards for internal use at all levels, including an executive audience; performs BI system maintenance activities, upgrades and manages security controls; performs quality control on data derived from disparate data sources; and translates business data into usable information that improves business decision making.

This position is distinguished by primary responsibility for building and shaping San Jose Water's analytical culture and Tableau Center of Excellence (CoE) with expertise in Tableau Desktop development, Tableau Server administration, data pipeline design, performance tuning of Tableau Dashboards, high-availability Server architecture, process automation, and self-service analytics. The incumbent influences business decisions through data visualizations and leads data analytics initiatives and organizational change using modern tools and techniques such as Tableau, Artificial Intelligence Natural Language Processing (AI NLP), Internet of Things (IoT), spatial data, and data warehousing

Specific Responsibilities

The Business Intelligence Analyst facilitates the development of a Tableau Center of Excellence (CoE); encourages an analytical mindset and culture within the organization; develops Tableau data analytics reporting, visualization, and dashboards; blends various data sources and maintains high security within the Tableau platform; performance tuning of Tableau Dashboards; manages life cycle of Tableau server topology through Tableau Services Manager; architects, configures, administers, and maintains Tableau Server; ensures reliable operation of Tableau Server with high performing environment; plans Tableau Server resources and performs bottleneck analysis using third party tools such as Tabmon, Logshark, and Tabjolt; facilitates and engages in strategic and tactical planning sessions, identifies opportunities for automation and business improvement, and works with teams to develop scalable solutions for growth; supports end-users by reviewing and auditing user access, creating training materials, and facilitating training.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Extensive knowledge of the Business Intelligence domain. Ability to build advanced visualizations using Tableau; troubleshoot and resolve Tableau Server node failovers and security issues; create, cleanse, blend and curate data from disparate sources; work effectively with developers, stakeholders and subject-matter experts to establish technical vision and analyze trade-offs between usability and performance needs; and train new users in Tableau development. Skill in architecting a scalable Tableau Server environment for high availability. Working knowledge of database systems and data warehousing concepts. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent written and oral communication with ability to convey complex technical considerations to an executive audience.

Required Education and Experience

A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business Intelligence, Data Analytics or a similar field or equivalent work experience.

Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server certification.

 Experience working with databases and database tools/applications such as Toad, Fulcrum, Data Point, and SQL Developer; writing SQL against relational database systems; and using BI and analytics tools to develop reports, visualizations, or dashboards.
