The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign https://faa.illinois.edu/units/theatre  invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor specializing in Art and Entertainment Technology with a proposed start date of August 16, 2022. Teaching faculty positions contribute primarily to the educational mission of the university, with distinct responsibilities and opportunities for promotion and engagement within that mission. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track (specialized faculty) appointment on an academic year (nine-month) service basis paid over twelve months, carrying an initial appointment of a one-year contract with potential for renewal based on performance.  Multi-year contracts typically follow promotion within this path.

Qualifications

We seek a self-motivated professional with a creative vision for leading aspiring theatrical technicians toward mastery of the practice of new technologies combined with traditional theatre practices with a focus on craft, engineering techniques, and problem-solving skills as they relate to entertainment technology. MFA or significant professional experience in entertainment technology preferred, as well as teaching in support for areas in lighting, audio, media and/or technical systems integration. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, production staff and guest artists in a diverse environment is a must. Essential skills include understanding of theatrical design aesthetics and principles, comprehensive knowledge of safety measures and hazards related to theatre productions, proficiency in CAD drafting, ability to teach a range of courses in the areas of engineering and drafting, scenery shop construction, stage electrics, audio support, and student technical assistant management. Courses may include CAD drafting, welding, rigging, automation, computer-networking, lighting systems and control, sound systems and engineering. Effective organizational, communication and problem-solving skills, and a passion for mentoring students and in making a positive impact toward diversity, inclusion, and equity in theatrical practice and education is essential. Must possess an ability to communicate and collaborate effectively and to draw the creative best out of any team of collaborators. The ideal candidate at the Teaching Assistant Professor level will demonstrate the potential for creative impact of community or national stature.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include AET program design and development; teaching courses in Art and Entertainment Technology relevant to their area of expertise; advising students in the AET major; providing project advising for AET practicums; and will have the primary responsibility to facilitate the development of professional internship experiences. The nominal load will be 80% teaching, 20% service with the understanding that project advising will be counted as teaching, and general advising and internship development will be counted as service.

The successful candidate will join a scenic, lighting, and sound technology faculty of 7, and a dynamic, collaborative team at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Department of Theatre As a part of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at Illinois, the Department of Theatre includes 23 faculty members, 13 Krannert Center Design and Technical faculty members, 7 campus affiliated faculty members, 145 undergraduates and more than 50 graduate students. The department offers BFA programs in acting; theatre studies; and design, technology and management, as well an MA and PhD research program. The department and its production programs are housed in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, a state of the art, multi-theatre facility that operates collaboratively within an artistic structure comprised of theatre, dance, music, opera, and professional touring performances. Theatre faculty work closely with Krannert Center staff and the faculties of the Department of Dance and the Musical Theatre & Opera Program. Salary

Salary commensurate with experience, with a minimum for Teaching Assistant Professor level set at $60,000. All salaries at the University of Illinois are public record.
