GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

A Technical Research Assistant I position is available at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, which focuses on the roles of novel specialized pro-resolving mediators in the resolution of lung inflammation and injury. This is an opening for a highly motivated individual for a one-year appointment, with the possibility of extension based on excellent performance and continued funding. This position will allow participation in translational human research projects focused on the study of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying lung inflammation in patients with severe asthma and children with severe viral lung infections.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Bench work including cell culture, processing and storing human blood and airway samples, preparing samples for flow cytometry, extracting RNA/DNA from samples for gene expression, performing ELISA for lipid and peptide analysis, performing Western blot analysis for protein expression, preparing slides for immunofluorescent and confocal microscopy.
  • Maintaining equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner. Inventory supplies, alert supervisor and prepare orders for needed supplies, mixing standard reagents.
  • Maintaining a record of results and methodologies in an electronic laboratory notebook, summarizing and analyzing results, compiling data from studies into charts and graphs and performing basic statistics.
  • Conducting literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the supervisor.
  • Carrying out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.
  • Non-bench work will include liaising with a clinical research assistant at Boston Children's Hospital to collect samples from patients enrolled in a research study focused on criticall ill children with viral bronchiolitis.


  • Qualifications
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Must have a BA, BS, or MS degree in biology, chemistry, or related science discipline
    • Previous laboratory coursework or laboratory work experience required. Examples of relevant prior laboratory experience would be work or volunteer experience in a biomedical research laboratory performing RNA extraction, PCR analysis, lipid extractions, or cell culture work. Minimum 1 year prior related work.
    SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
    • The analytical skills to resolve problems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
    • Comfort with summarizing and reporting experimental results to researchers
    • Excellent time-management, organizational, written and oral communication, and teamwork skills.
    • Self-directed learning and ability to work independently
    • Meticulous attention to detail, practiced laboratory documentation, commitment to producing accurate and high quality work.
    • Awareness of basic safety issues, ability to follow safety procedures, and maintain a safe work environment.
    • Familiarity with basic laboratory protocols
    • Must have or be willing to develop competencies within the Life Sciences
