The Department of Nuclear, Plasma and Radiological Engineering (NPRE) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time Teaching Faculty position (Open Rank) to teach advanced courses that support the interdisciplinary Master of Engineering in Energy Systems (MEngES) degree and the graduate certificate in Energy and Sustainability Engineering ( https://ease.illinois.edu ), both of which attract students from all fields of engineering and from other disciplines related to energy and sustainability. The MEngES is planned to double in size from its present level of 25 students to 50 over the next 3-5 years. The successful candidate will be expected to play a leading role in course and curriculum development and to provide academic advising to students in Energy Systems. The successful candidate will be encouraged to obtain external funding to perform research in engineering education, energy systems, or sustainability, and will be given the opportunity to do so.
Candidates with appropriate level of experience can be considered for the position of the Director of MEngES degree program and should indicate interest in such a role, along with relevant background, within their cover letter.

The Teaching Faculty position is non-tenure-track specialized faculty position appointed on a twelve-month service basis. Initial appointment may be eligible for a three-year multi-year contract renewed annually, at a rank commensurate with prior experience, and at a highly competitive salary based on qualifications. Long term promotion from Assistant to Associate to Full Teaching Professor is based on the individual's record of teaching, classroom innovation, student interactions, and scholarly accomplishments.

Teaching activities are well supported by the department, college, and university. Candidates will have opportunities to interact with a large community of education researchers, supported by the Academy for Excellence in Engineering Education (AE3), the campus wide Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL), and the College of Education. The University of Illinois, a prominent R1 institution, is home to numerous research centers on energy, water, and sustainability ( https://sustainability.illinois.edu/research/energy-at-illinois/energy-centers-and-labs/ ).

All successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in engineering or a related field, as well as demonstrated interest or track record in developing coursework, teaching effectively, and mentoring/advising students. It is highly desirable that candidates exhibit significant potential in interdisciplinary and collaborative research, including the writing of proposals for funding.

The proposed start date is August 16, 2023; however, an earlier starting date may be considered depending on the needs of the organization. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Applications must be submitted online at http://jobs.illinois.edu . The application package should include the following: a) cover letter, b) curriculum vitae, c) teaching statement, d) statement of service, e) diversity statement, f) representative teaching artifacts including syllabi and learning goals, laboratory or homework exercises, g) research statement (for candidates intending to pursue research), and h) names/contact information for three references all in a single PDF file as an upload in the "CV/Resume" section. The statement on diversity should address past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching, research, and/or service. To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by April 7, 2023, 6:00PM (CST). Early applications are strongly encouraged as interviews may take place during the application period; however, no hiring decision will be made until after the closing date. Questions about the application process should be referred to nuclear@illinois.edu .
