CALSTART is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable leader for the largest initiative within the organization. With 10 or more years of demonstrated experience in the medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (MHDV) industry, this highly motivated and strategic leader must possess a strong and deep knowledge of advanced technologies and fuels in medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles and commercial off-road equipment. The successful candidate will need to have an outstanding relationship with manufacturers, suppliers, and fleets in this market segment and the ability to work closely with Federal, State and Local agencies at the program and policy levels.

Our Trucks & Off-Road (T&OR) Initiative Senior Director will:

  • Have overall responsibility for leading CALSTART's T&OR practice including market acceleration, strategy development, and administration of the Initiative
  • Be responsible for the development of the group's Operations Plan, Resource and Hiring Plan, Fiscal Year Budget, and overall performance of the Initiative
  • Direct and lead our T&OR Team, managing the subgroups of Market Acceleration (HVIP, CORE, Voucher/Salesforce, ISeF), Fleet & Community Engagement, and Truck Strategy and Industry Partnerships
  • Lead Business Development in T&OR in securing new work, strengthening our position in the marketplace, and enhancing our brand
  • Be prepared to manage some of the largest and complex projects within CALSTART and lead interaction with key clients like CARB, FTA, DOE, etc.
  • Be responsible for overseeing the portfolio of T&OR projects and programs under the management of T&OR team, ensuring their timely execution and progress
  • Be a thought-leader and expert in the marketplace and develop best practices for industry conferences and publications
  • Participate in cross-initiative, activity and regional collaboration, strategic planning, senior team guidance, training, and oversight
The position will report to the VP, Chief Operations Officer and is ideally based at our headquarters in Pasadena, California. Other CALSTART locations may be considered based on a candidate's experience and qualifications.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Extensive (>10 years) medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (MHDV) industry experience
  • Deep knowledge of advanced technologies for MHDVs
  • Strong program oversight and project management experience
  • Excellent and proven organizational management and team leadership skills
  • Experience in developing Business Plans, Operations Plans, Hiring Plans and Fiscal Year Budgets
  • Significant experience with strategic planning and in developing and implementing strategies to cause change (theory of change)
  • A proven track record of business development in assembling cutting-edge technology or market support projects and winning funding (internal and/or external) for them
  • Experience with crafting and managing policy advocacy efforts that support MHDV funding and policy needs
  • Successful history of managing a large and diverse team of professionals and administrative people with a focus on leadership, collaboration, and problem solving
  • Strong and precise verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills to communicate key industry information to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work with diverse external stakeholder groups to build and support program and project activities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Willingness to travel within North America
Desired Skills
  • Advanced degrees and certifications in engineering, technology, business, policy or relevant fields
  • Certificate in project management and other relevant skills
  • Specific sector knowledge of and expertise with advanced transportation technologies and fuels including electricity, hydrogen, fuel cells and energy storage, natural gas, bio- and renewable fuels
  • Knowledge working with utility companies to help deliver infrastructure
  • Experience with zero-emission transportation infrastructure planning and implementation
  • Experience with life-cycle cost analysis, market projections, data analysis and validation
  • Experience with developing and managing pilot programs to demonstrate market readiness
  • Experience in clean innovative freight and other commercial vehicle mobility solutions
  • Experience leading and creating outward facing industry position papers or other elements to help define market segments and strategies
  • Experience developing strategic guidance documents including roadmaps, planning documents and operational plans
