Senior Manager I, Software Engineering

The In Store Omni Services team builds services and applications to provide Walmart customers with best in-class experiences throughout Walmart stores. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the experience for our customers through innovation and technology that will enable customers to digitally engage with us during their shopping journey. We are seeking a Senior Manager I, Software Engineering to lead the evolution of the customer digital journey on the Walmart app.

This role will drive Walmart's technology vision, strategy, and roadmap in one or multiple domains and help our teams achieve Engineering and Operational excellence. As a Senior Manager I, Software Engineering, you'll spend your days translating requirements into solutions, writing/reviewing code, collaborating with cross-functional teams and providing us with the insights necessary to think beyond the status quo. You'll oversee small project teams consisting of other engineers who will look to you as a trusted advisor, a subject matter expert who provides guidance and the right tools to get the job done.

  • Leads and directs in large-scale, complex, cross-functional projects by reviewing project requirements; translating requirements into technical solutions; directing and reviewing design artifacts (for example, proof of concepts, prototypes); writing and developing code; overseeing software design; reviewing unit test cases; communicating status and issues to team members and stakeholders; directing project team and cross functional teams; enhancing design to prevent reoccurrences of defects; ensuring on-time delivery and hand-offs; interacting with project manager to provide input on project plan; and providing leadership to the project team.
  • Leads the work of cross-functional groups of 8-10 engineers, including offshore associates, for assigned Engineering projects by providing pertinent documents, direction, and examples; identifying short- and long-term solutions and timeline; reviewing and approving proposed solutions; implementing new architectural patterns; and performing design and code reviews of changes.
  • Directs root cause analysis of critical business and production issues by reviewing and analyzing information (for example, issue, impact, criticality, possible root cause); directing actions as designated in the plan; interpreting the results to determine further action; directing root cause analysis to prevent future occurrence of issues; and reviewing and approving online documentation.
  • Supports business objectives by collaborating with business partners to identify opportunities and drive resolution; partnering with business to define priorities; identifying short- and long-term solutions; and leading cross-functional partnership.
  • Provides supervision and development opportunities for associates by selecting and training; mentoring; assigning duties; building a team-based work environment; establishing performance expectations and conducting regular performance evaluations; providing recognition and rewards; coaching for success and improvement; and ensuring diversity awareness.
  • Promotes and supports company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity by training and providing direction to others in their use and application; ensuring compliance with them; and utilizing and supporting the Open Door Policy.
  • Ensures business needs are being met by evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of current plans, programs, and initiatives; consulting with business partners, managers, co-workers, or other key stakeholders; soliciting, evaluating, and applying suggestions for improving efficiency and cost effectiveness; and participating in and supporting community outreach events.


About You

You have and can implement big ideas with a positive attitude. You want to be a part of the team to disrupt this industry and you have these main skills:
  • Extensive understanding of mobile and web application, microservice architecture and design, and best practices around iOS and Android development using varied of technologies available to you.
  • Expert level knowledge and understanding of Java, Spring Boot, and experience working with distributed systems and teams.
  • Experience with refactoring/redesigning/rewriting existing applications is a plus (We are in the process of redesigning and refactoring of our current system)
  • Ability to build products with focus on testability, someone who loves test coverage (well versed with Mockito and JUnit)
  • A disciplined approach to development, code review, testing, documentation and code structure in a team environment.
  • A constant desire to improve, learn more and take things to the next level and a passion for adopting the latest features in Kubernetes, Java, and Spring Boot.

  • Knowledge of technologies used in building scalable, distributed systems in virtualized cloud environments.
  • Ability to design for fault tolerance and high availability.
  • Have proficient knowledge and experience with iOS, Android, Kotlin, Swift, Java, Python
  • Solid devops skills in troubleshooting live applications, assessing performance bottlenecks of applications
  • Develop high performance and scalable solutions that extract, transform, and load big data
