Trial Advocacy, Trial Team, Moot Court, and Legal Studies Minor

The University of Illinois College of Law is seeking a Visiting Law Advisor provides academic guidance, coaching and support to Law students in the Trial Advocacy, Trial Team, and Moot Court programs, and to undergraduate students in the Legal Studies Minor. This position also coaches members of the Undergraduate Trial Team.

This is a fulltime, visiting, 12-month appointment commencing August 16, 2021, with a possibility of reappointment for a second year. Salary is commensurate with experience. This position is eligible for University of Illinois benefit programs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Advising, Coaching and Mentoring

  • Legal Studies Minor:
    • Provide educational guidance and assistance for students who are enrolled in the minor, or who are considering enrolling in the minor.
    • Respond to student inquiries and otherwise reach out, recommending courses and determining appropriate educational solutions for students enrolled in the Minor.
    • Reach out to students if they are having trouble completing their coursework and respond to students who need support or guidance.
    • Provide case management to students who may need special support (including rare exceptions) while completing the minor.
  • Trial Advocacy/Trial Team/Moot Court
    • Advise and coach Law students regarding the Trial Advocacy, Trial Team, and Moot Court programs and also with respect to appropriate and effective use of courtroom technology
    • Coach the University's Undergraduate Trial Team

Administrative Duties
  • Legal Studies Minor
  • Work alongside the Coordinator of the Legal Studies Minor to track the advancement of students as they progress through the minor.
  • Work with the Director of the Legal Studies Minor and the Coordinator of the Minor to prepare any required reports for the College of Law administration.
  • Periodically meet with the Coordinator and Director of the Legal Studies Minor to review student progress, reports to the Administration, new initiatives, and any other relevant matters.
  • Work with the Coordinator of the Minor and the Director of the Legal Studies Minor as required. In addition, the Advisor will work with representatives from other campus units to manage the required documentation.
  • Work with the uAchieve system, and with the Degree Audit System personnel to track student completion of the minor.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of competitions, including travel logistics and timely submission of expense reports for participants and coaches; and preparation of trial exhibits and other trial materials.
  • Manage student employees who assist with videography and courtroom technology in the beginning and advanced Trial Advocacy courses.

Program and Curriculum Development
  • Legal Studies Minor
    • Upon request, assist with assessments of new courses proposed for the Legal Studies Minor.
  • Trial Advocacy/Trial Team/Moot Court
    • Manage logistics for the Trial Advocacy and Trial Team programs, such as: coordinating adjunct faculty and coaches; researching and recommending new cases and course materials; developing/delivering classroom exercises and study guides; and facilitating simulated trial exercises including providing onsite guidance and support on exhibits and courtroom technology, interfacing with presiding judges and recruiting jurors.
    • Recruit and coach members of the Undergraduate Trial Team for practices and competitions.

This position requires a Juris Doctor degree and success in some combination in of Trial Advocacy, Trial Team, Client Counseling, Moot Court, or similar law school programs and activities. Passage of a state bar exam and/or experience with the uAchieve system and the Degree Audit System are preferred.
